I HATE HOUSEWORK!. I just don't do it unless I can possibly avoid it. So you can imagine the mammoth task I face when I do decide to get down and get dirty.
I'd spotted this Magic Eraser in the Co-op, where they were running a video about it. Nah! Sounds too good to be true.
A sponge that cleans just about any hard surface. Including making it easy to clean the stuck on grease on kitchen tiles. Then I saw it again in Poundstretcher. Nah! bit dear to try at £3.99, it's bound to be another con. But you don't need to use any chemicals at all, so you wouldn't have to pay for any of those. And must be environmentally friendly too, especially as also it is packed in just a cardboard box, no plastic.
But when I saw it again in Wilkinsons, and then in Woolies - well, I've never been accused of being a housewife - I do hate cleaning - but I always was a sucker for a miracle product. So I got a pack.
Doesn't look much. Just a white sponge, which measures 12" x 5" x1½" . Cut a piece off and dampen it, and rub. Well, Magic is definitely the word. The muck just wipes off. Kitchen cupboard doors and work tops, sink, appliances - any hard surface really, except not the plastic kettle. Takes the shine off it. So I'm not going to try it on the plastic bath.
The kitchen tiles where spots of grease really stick on hard; I find impossible to clean. Not now. This sponge brings it off with hardly any elbow grease at all. Brilliant.
You don't need to put on the old apron and rubber gloves, no mess, no cleaning fluids. It does gradually crumble away, but it keeps on working right on down to the tiniest piece you can still hold onto, however dirty it gets. And miracle of miracles, it is really easy to clean off that awful grease that accumulates on the top of kitchen cupboards and takes ages to get off with Brillo pads and Cif. Magic!! Shows how impressed I am with it if I'm getting on with that sort of a job!! You just keep on having to try it on the next job and the next. My oven hob has never looked so brand new since - well, since it was brand new.
So when Husband came in looking for a cloth to clean the motorbike with, I offered him the Magic Eraser. Of course being All-Wise Husband he pooh-poohed the idea. Accused me of yet again falling for an advert. I refused to give him a cloth till he had at least tried the sponge. So finally he gave in and, raising eyes to heaven, took it outside, saying he'd be back in a minute for that cloth.
One sparkling bike later, he came back, raving about it. It's the best thing he'd ever used. Absolutely brilliant. No apology offered of course!
You might think £3.99 a bit dear, but not if you don't throw it away as soon as it gets dirty or crumbling. Keep using it to the last bit and a packet lasts long enough to do loads of jobs. Enough to do my whole kitchen from embarrassingly yucky to showroom sparkling, with plenty left over. I always keep a piece handy ready to do a little wipe down around the taps or a dried on spill down the front of a cupboard door, just for a minute whilst waiting for the kettle to boil or the toast to toast. Never kept the kitchen so clean for so long!
I think it must work from the sponge being so dense. Surely if there were chemicals in it, there would, by law, have to be something on the packet to say so.
Just a suggestion: if you think £3.99 is too dear for an experiment, try getting some friends to share it with you. You can get about half a dozen pieces out of a pack.
Everybody I've recommended this to has been very sceptical and tried it only to humour me. Cos it just looks nothing. But when they do finally try it, they think, as I do, that it is PURE MAGIC.
