Have you ever looked at the pile of VHS cassettes in your lounge and wondered if there was some way of reducing the amount of space they take up? I am a sports and music fan, and have numerous videos of football matches, tennis finals, boxing bouts, cricket centuries, and live concerts. The challenge was to preserve for my dotage the recordings of England, Brazil, SWFC, McEnroe, Connors, Lennox Lewis, Michael Vaughn, Eagles and Robbie Williams in a more compact medium, and free up my video-cassettes for re-use!

This machine does the trick. You link it up to your VHS player, select the appropriate speed for your DVD disc (to handle the length of your VHS taped recording), press a button, and it does the rest.

I had very little technical knowledge of the various DVD disc types (see other review, which is incredibly helpful), so was guided by the Comet salesman towards TDK DVD-RW discs, and Panasonic 120 min DVD-RAM. If you just want to make a temporary recording, e.g. from the TV, you can record over and over again onto these formats, just as you have done in the past with video-cassettes. The difference is the picture and sound quality. Both these DVD types provide outstanding quality. The picture and sound is immaculate, an exact replica of the live broadcast.

The TDK DVD-RW discs are capable of recording 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours or 6 hours of material depending on your choice of setting on the JVC Recorder. The manual recommends that you use the 6 hour setting for slow-moving pictures, eg dramas, as there is a slight reduction in picture quality.

You will need an uninterrupted afternoon if you're going to read the instruction manual! But it is worth it!
