I bought one of these 3 weeks ago to go on holiday. I also bought a spare battery off ebay (£11). I am a bit new to camcorders, only having an ancient Sony before. So having fiddled around with the settings managed to produce the first tape in absolute silence. So then I read the book, and got the soung working again, (my fault) The 740 is AMAZING. even the standard (808)battery will run off 2 tapes before giving up. and the bigger (815)spare battery lasted the rest of the holiday which took another 3 tapes (60 min) and didnt run out. Back home connecting to the PC was easy and I just let Pinnacle Studio do all the work. Editing is simple using it. And the results were great. The fold out LCD screen has a joystick on it and you can do just about everything from there. The colours are rich even in the eyepiece viewfinder. This isn't a professional model by any means, not having options for an external microphone, nor built in light, but be serious, how many of us would really use those facilities anyway. I never needed them as it performs very well in low light, and there are setting to alter to record indoors as well as under fluorescent light. All in all 9.5 out of 10. And can be bought new for very little money indeed.
