Having bought my last camcorder 15 years ago and also the fact that when you held it on your shoulder it felt like you were carrying a sack of potatoes I decided it was time to go out and buy a new one.
I went to my local dixons and had a look at the cameras they had on display and decided to go for a Mini DV camcorder as I liked the idea of linking the camera up with the computer which would allow me to edit my little home masterpieces! Move over Steven Spielberg!!
While I was in the process of looking my friend had been out and bought one. I had a good look at it (Canon MV450i). It was very small and looked perfect but I was quite taken aback when I was told it was £750. I decided it was too expensive for me. So I came on ciao and had a look around and eventually found one, which, had the features that I wanted, and one that was fairly small but not too big. I went to my local Jessops and got them to price match Empire-Direct.co.uk and had it reduced from £499.99 to £369.99. A real bargain.
The camera is the JVC DVL-150EK. It is a reasonably small camcorder but not as small as some you can get but I wasn’t too concerned as the price was exceptionally cheap and im' not one of these people who has to have everything miniscule and pay £750 upwards for it.
The camera comes complete with all the accessories such as remote control, scart adaptor and leads to connect it into your VCR or TV and record to a large VHS tape or simply play it back on a big screen for all your friends and family. It also comes with a hand strap and of course battery and mains charger. The battery lasts for approximately 1.5 hours recording which is more than enough and takes about the same time to charge the battery up from empty.
The actual unit itself is small and very lightweight. It fits snugly into the palm of your hand and is made very durable and should survive any knocks or bumps you may have. The major advantage of this camcorder too was that you don’t have to look through the viewfinder like all the old cameras if you don’t want to. There is a pull out screen on the side where you can film with the camera at a distance from you and see where you are walking while you are filming so you don’t trip up any more. Under the screen there are the controls for the light, which is on the front of the camera and is used when you are in low light conditions or at night and is very bright and proved to be useful.
The camera has 3 main modes. Play mode, which, allows you to play back what you have recorded, and listen to the sound through the built in speaker. Automatic Mode, which allows simple recording and the camera, will take care of the auto focusing and light changes. Manual mode is for the advanced person where you can create your own digital effects such as fades and transitions between scenes and alter the contrast levels of the camera screen and focusing and any other set-up options on the camcorder.
The camcorder also has a photo button, which allows you to take still shots of the subject and it will record approximately 5 seconds of this to tape giving a still picture effect when you play the tape back. The camera as I said earlier can be connected up to a computer where you can edit your footage and add sound effects and titles and basically create a mini film. Your computer needs to have a firewire card installed in it to allow you to link up to the computer. Ask the assistant wherever you buy the camcorder from about this and they will give you all the information.
I purchased my Camcorder from Jessops for £369.99 who also offer 6 months interest free credit. If you want a budget but high quality DV camcorder then this could be the one for you.
