All the reviews I read about the poor electronic stabilization were right! If you want to hand hold it be prepared for some pretty poor results. Anticipating this I invested in a decent tripod, jib and steadicam (from B ... ...in stereo mics are okay but thankfully there is a mic input so I use an external Rode stereo videomic which produces great results.
The ability to plug in an external screen makes using the jib simple.
When I read the spec and saw the 60 Gb HDD I thought I'd never use all that ... last weekend I was left with just 20 minutes of space left at full HD recording!

The built in stereo mics are okay but thankfully there is a mic input so I use an external Rode stereo videomic which produces great results.

The files are recorded in .TOD format which, as I understand is almost the same as mpeg2 but you have to use Cyberlink's PowerDirector to convert to true mpeg2 which is a pain but no great issue.
So, to summarise: - LIKES Looks great. Superb quality (build & picture) All the features I need DISLIKES Poor stabilisation Average sound HDD could be bigger
Finally, would I buy again? I'm saving for a second unit!!

I have rewritten this review (new at all this) and I hope it is more helpful.
I know like a lot of other people out there, I waited patiently for this product and can safely say that the GZ-HD7 delivers on some, but not all, of its promises.

On the plus side I find the focus ring is excellent, and the Focus Assist does make the manual focus very easy. On the back of the camcorder there is a cluster of image controls. ... ...speed, aperture and exposure compensation easily accessible and pretty efficient. On reflection I would actually say that it is more like a scaled down prosumer camcorder with the relatively large body, the aray of external buttons, and the focus ring. But I wasn't really surprised, as like a lot of people I knew that this Everio would offer a high level of manual controls.
