I had been looking for a DVD/VHS combi machine for my parents who wanted something small and compact, who wouldnt play too many DVDs. I searched on the net through Kelkoo and stumbled across this unit for £138.99 from EmpireDirect.co.uk which included Lord of the Rings 1+2 on DVD!!.(offer has now ended :-( )

Other Features:
Can watch a DVD whilst recording TV onto VHS tape. Can record from DVD to VHS(depending on copyright!)
Setup:
The instructions are very clear, even to the novice, on how to set the unit up. Simply plug in your scart (and aerial) lead to the unit and into your TV, and your ready to tune the TV in. Use your TV tuner to find the JVC video setup screen. Then to store TV channels to the unit, you simply select ACMS which automatically searches and stores TV channels. I hadn't set up the unit with Cable or satellite so can't say how easy or difficult it is, but it is compatible and the instructions give you a step by step guide of how to set the unit up with Sky etc.
In Use/ Performance:
Having used it now for a few months, we've been very happy with the quality of this unit. Starting with the VHS side, the quality of recordings from TV is outstanding, with hardly any reduction in quality and no noise lines. Recordings look like your watching 'live' TV!! Sound quality is good too, using the NICAM stereo system. It rewinds tapes quickly and quietly and doesnt vibrate the house like some machines!! lol:-) In recording you can record Short Play and Long play allowing up to 8 hours on a 4 hour tape. The Videoplus system works fine and again is easy to use with its own dedicated button on the remote. VHS playback is simple to do too. It will automatically change to the video channel once you press play.
The DVD side of the unit is operated by pressing a DVD/VHS button which alternates between the two functions of the machine. Playing DVDs is straightforward like VHS tapes is. Just insert DVD and press play, and up it comes on the screen :-) Playback quality in both video and sound is excellent as expected. It has coped with any film I have played on it with no glitches in playback. I have played a DVD whilst recording a TV programme on VHS, and it works!!, with no interference at all on either VHS or DVD. The DVD part will also play audio CDs, MP3 cds, WMA files. So if you have music on your PC on CD, you can listen to them on this unit which is handy. Once a CD is loaded, the onscreen menu shows tracks listing and you select which track you want using the remote, or you can just play the lot. The unit can also play JPEG(picture) discs, playback is the same as CDs.
Other features:
The remote control, covering all these features, is quite large as can be expected, and may be daunting to some users at first. After using the remote for a while, you'll find that its easy to use and the buttons are well laid out.
The unit has front AV ports. This allows you to plug in an external source such as a digital camera or camcorder. Being on the front makes it so much more accessible than having to rip out the unit to reach to the rear!!
During playback of certain DVDs, you can change the camera angle of the scene.
Overall:
If you are looking for a DVD/VHS combi unit, then I'd recommend the JVC HR-XV2. It offers very good value for money, and is easy to use. With the many features it has, it should be suitable for most peoples needs, and it won't hurt your pocket too much!! :-)
Advantages: Convenient/ Reliable/ Good picture quality Disadvantages: If you need to send it in for repairs you can't play videos or DVDs
I've had this Video/DVD combi for well over a year now and I couldn't be happier! No longer must my room be constantly rearranged to fit in numerous new appliances as this does everything you could possible want it to do!
Firstly - Video features are fairly standard, play, rewind, fast-forward, pause and frame-by-frame watching. Time recording is very useful for when you can't be bothered to stay up late to press record on a film (which I often ... ...several programs in succession. However the greatest feature is the ability to record DVDs onto videos in this one machine, though you will need another VCR if you want to copy videos to videos.
DVD features will equally rival most standard DVD players also allowing slow motion, pause etc and providing you with a stunning picture and sound quality. Make no mistake there have been no sacrifices made to produce this beauty and it doesn't look half ...

Advantages: VCR and DVD!! Disadvantages: 1 year warranty
I think this is a great buy, because it conveiently has both a VCR and DVD, and saves having to buy either both a VCR and DVD player, or just having one and not being able to play the other. I think I am one of those people who can't handle handle having too many gadgets and wires around so this thing is really handy and would suit other people who have trouble being organsised with gadgets and bits and bobs and such!
It's slim and stylish too, ... ...subtle look (for me) that it will fit in with any TV!And it has the always handy remote, which isn't huge and cumbersome, as some 2 in 1's are. It would also fit well into any cupboard unit and wouldn't take up too much space. The price is good-£60! Though i don't have too much experiance to know other prices with these gadgets. I think this is a good price to pay for something like this, and would definately save money on buying a separate DVD and ...

Advantages: All-in-one, Popular make. Good price Disadvantages: confusing remote control!
I purchased my unit from Sky.buy for £110 so i was already happy with the all-in-one combi before i even took it out of the box. It is a standard 'Region-2' dvd player althgouh, after much searching, i managed to find a disk which unlocks it to 'Multi-region' and is RCE compatible. In general this is a superb machine, the picture quality is above-par, the design is fantastic and there are more than enough choices for connecting htis unit to your ... ...I must confess that it took me over half an hour to tune the VCD into the TV (maybe i'm now too old for new technology!) but once it was set it did the job. The remote control is cumbersome and i tend not to avoid using it. You can re-program the remote to work on your tv so avoiding loads of controllers on the arm of the sofa!
Copying DVD-to-Vidoe is very straightforward although this will only let you copy 'un-copyrighted' material. If it is your ...
