I also had my eye on the Aiwa models knowing from word of mouth about their ability to play MP3 and many other compressed CD's. They were out of those, so I decided to give the JVC model a try. It did look like I would not be disappointed when I purchased this DVD player, and so far I have not been.

I recommend if you do not already have the required hookups to purchase the monstercords, which come in a variety of functions, uses, and different lengths. Make sure to ask someone if you are not sure which ones are right for you. Be aware of all the components your DVD player takes, because some store reps. do not have knowledge of this.
Below are some of the features of this JVC DVD: more
I had been looking for a reasonable priced DVD player for about a good six months. I went to many stores, but because of the after Christmas sales all the players were sold out so I did a little research on DVD players and which ones were affordable, not too cheap. Just a price where you get the results that you want. I was not looking for all the extras like the extra jacks and plugs, and surround sound. Although I might consider buying that in the future to come as I recently purchased a Sony 32'' flat screen so I was looking for a DVD player that would go along nicely with that put into the entertainment system.
The first time around I purchased the cheapest APEX model DVD player. At the time I did not really know anything about playing PAL CD's which the DVD player would not let me, so instead I decided to do an exchange and spend a few extra hundred dollars to get a reliable and solid performance DVD player. This is when a sales rep. directed me towards the JVC XV-523GD and its several other models. I also had my eye on the Aiwa models knowing from word of mouth about their ability to play MP3 and many other compressed CD's. They were out of those, so I decided to give the JVC model a try. It did look like I would not be disappointed when I purchased this DVD player, and so far I have not been.

-Audio/Video Cable
-S-video cable
-AV compulink cord
-Remote control unit
-R6P (SUM-3)/AA (15F) Batteries (x 2)

*If you desire better speaker performance not all the hook ups are available for Dolby Digital Surround Sound, even though there is the option for it built into this JVC model DVD player. I recommend if you do not already have the required hookups to purchase the monstercords, which come in a variety of functions, uses, and different lengths. Make sure to ask someone if you are not sure which ones are right for you. Be aware of all the components your DVD player takes, because some store reps. do not have knowledge of this.

-Surround Function*- This unit is compatible with Dolby Digital surround and DTS surround which is available only with digital output only.
-3D Phonic function- One I find to be extremely useful if you do not have surround available. You can enjoy surround sound with your 2-channel system

- Multi-disc playback- You can enjoy audio CD discs and Video Discs, as well as DVD Video discs.

Design
This DVD player offered by JVC is a little different that the regular color scheme DVD players are offered in. It comes in an attractive, shiny gold finish. Still, it gives maximum performance for the price you pay, and manages to stay solid and durable while handling the setup process. I was looking for a DVD player a little different, but still attractive and this is the one.
Remote
The remote control included with the JVC DVD player is laid out very organized and easy to understand. This is the convenience to access all your features and additional functions from the remote. The buttons on the remote are big enough to read, for easy access to every feature. And once you read through the user manual and make yourself familiar with all the features on the remote you should have no problem operating it. Just remember to set the remote to the brand or model of your TV so it will operate correctly. Pointing the remote a fair distance away from the player, it still gets excellent reception.
Sound Quality
I use the basic cables, and bought the additional MonsterCables for the S Video hookup. Ever since then I have had no problems with the sound. The sound quality is always exceptional and in all aspects above your average VCR when compared.
Picture Quality
Some of the best I have ever seen, the picture quality of this JVC DVD player is flawless. I have already purchased about 7 DVD's, and I always rent some on those Friday nights, and so far I have discovered no glitches in picture at all.
Drawbacks
If I have noticed any drawbacks on this DVD player, sometimes the menu screen takes a while to come up, compared to other DVD players. I do not consider this bad, but some people it might bother if they are looking for an extremely fast functioning DVD player try out some of the more expensive JVC models with more advanced options.
Audio
I have played some of my regular music CD's on the JVC DVD player, and the sound has been rather good. I usually stick to my stereo player with playing my regular CD's, but this DVD player projects sound fairly well especially if you personalize the "3-D Phonic" option to get optimal results.
JVC XV-522 Overall
This DVD player overall is way more than average, it provides everything a reliable DVD player should have. It also provides even a couple extra options and features thrown into the packaged deal. The retail price on this JVC model DVD player $299.99, but I purchased mine for 199.99. on an after Christmas sale at Circuit City. If you are searching for a DVD player with all the regular and simple options then I suggest you give the JVC XV-522 a try, I think you will be impressed with what you see, and hear. I do also recommend this DVD player to anyone because it provides a wide variety of ways to play your regular Audio, Video, and regular DVD exclusives, in good and solid performance. So if you are looking for a reliable DVD player in reasonable price range then I suggest you try this JVC DVD player.
