The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien

The Silmarillion - J.R.R. Tolkien

The Silmarillion - J.R.R. Tolkien

AlthoughThe Silmarilliontakes place in the same imaginary world as J.J.R Tolkien'sThe Lord ... more

of the Rings, and was originally published four
years after the author's death and over two
decades after the former book, it is set much
earlier, in the First Age of the World. The tales
and the book which reads as a fusion between a
story collection and historical chronicle, are a
matter of legend even to the characters ofThe Lord
of the Rings:In the beginning Eru, the One, who in
the Elvish tongue is named Ilúvatar, made the
Ainur of his thought; and they made a great Music
before himTolkien wrote the heart of this material
very early in his career, and continued to work on
it throughout his life. It fell to his son,
Christopher Tolkien, to edit it into book form,
and such proved the unquenchable public appetite
that he subsequently oversaw 12 volumes ofThe
History of Middle-Earth. This edition features 20
highly evocative colour plates by Ted Nasmith,
themselves worth the price of admission, while
reinforcing the sense of a historical work are
genealogical tables, an extensive index, appendix
and colour map. Far removed from the genial style
ofThe Hobbit, this is Tolkien at his most formal,
his prose austere, poetically beautiful, his
storytelling capturing the epic scale, high drama
and melancholy wonder of myth. These stories of
elves and heroes and old gods are quite literally
the foundation of the entire modern
fantasy-publishing revival, and are therefore
essential reading. --Gary S. Dalkin

Tolkien's Christian themes kept bringing me back

Advantages: the Christian message
Disadvantages: none

...of Middle-Earth, the achievement of J.R.R. Tolkien, Paul Kocher examines what it is that attracts Sauron to the ring: 'Sauron's whole appetite is for command of other wills' (Kocher, 1974:56). Kocher then looks at Saruman, the 'secondary' evil character in the book, and examines his motive in desiring the ring: 'Saruman is more like Sauron than he realizes. They believe in the same thing, supremacy through absolute power' (Kocher, 1974:63). Kocher ...
...more specifically power to dominate others. However, those familiar with the book will know that it is not just Sauron and Saruman who are tempted by the ring. Many of the other characters are tempted by it: Gollum, Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, Galadriel, Aragorn and Boromir are just some of the other characters tempted, although all but Boromir and Frodo resist the temptation to yield it. In her article An Allegory Unveiled, a reading of The Lord of the ... more

Review on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit"

Advantages: Very many.
Disadvantages: None

I rate J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" as pure excellence, a masterpiece to be read by fantasy readers everywhere! Why? Once you take it up you become so caught up in this fictional world of Middle Earth and so caught up in the plot that you are loathe to put it down. This award winning fantasy novel occurs some time before what happens in the book "Lord of the Rings", and thus focuses on Bilbo's adventures with the ring and Thorin's dwarves. So basically, if you read or watched "Lord of the Rings" and wanted more background information on how this ring got into Bilbo's possession this is the book to read. It's also a good book for all those who would have liked to find out about why the Mirkwood elves and dwarves have a rift between them. This book is a definate must read. If you don't believe me, buy and read it yourself ;) ...

Review of The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien

Farmer Giles of Ham by J.R.R.Tolkien

Advantages: Magical Story
Disadvantages: None

This is a review of the book only. This book is published by HarperCollins and is 144 pages long. "Its imaginative atmosphere and magic are best captured when it is read aloud, when it will live with all the force of 'a tale that holdeth children from play and old men from the chimney corner". ~About The Author~ I don't always do an "about the author" in my reviews but I have admired and been fascinated by J.R.R.TOLKEIN's work since first reading the hobbit at ten years old. This fascination has stayed with me into adulthood and as far as I know I have all or almost all of his work. Although Tolkien is best known for The Hobbit, The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and the Silmarillion, he has also written lots of other fantastic children's books: Leaf by Niggle:Which recount's the strange adventures of the painter, Niggle ...

Review of Farmer Giles of Ham: Complete & Unabridged - J.R.R. Tolkien

Most read work of fiction ever, and deservedly so

Advantages: depth of detail
Disadvantages: slow at times

J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is the best selling fictional book of all time, with an estimated 150 million people having read the author's work. It is an epic 1200 page story that has fascinated readers worldwide since its publication in 1954. When I first discovered this book, I was 19, and working in an office. I had never been into fantasy, but picked this up out of respect for what I'd heard about it. Over the next month, I lived and breathed The Lord of the Rings, reading it when I got up, in my lunch break, and every evening. There are dozens of reviews on this title already, so I'll make mine specific, and tailor it to those who aren't fans of the fantasy genre. What Tolkien has managed so convincingly to do, is to create a believable world. The history and depth of his creation makes it seem real, and THAT ...
