When it comes to dogs, I always said I preferred big dogs to little ones. My last dog, Jazz, was a Labrador. (Those of you who have been on Ciao a long time will remember me writing about her after she died). I never dreamed in a million years about getting a small dog.
After Jazz died, I went a year without having a dog around. Then, I got Ollie. I acquired him from a friend. When I got him he was just 3 months old. He was so small and fluffy. He had that puppy smell about him. And his bark was a yap. I took him to the vet to get his injections. He cried and yelped like the world was ending, bless him!
A year on, and here I am writing about my personal experiences on Jack Russells. First of all, I'll just say there are loads of wonderful websites out there about Jack Russells, but one I've been looking at is www.ejrtca.com. They have a bit about the history of Jack Russells, and to get started, here's just one paragraph of what they say:
"The English Jack Russell Terrier is a type of a working terrier that goes into the earth after quarry. They are described as a small, sturdy, balanced terrier that is slightly longer than the length of their legs. They have been bred for hunting anything from rats to badgers since the early 1800's. The English Jack Russell Terrier has survived because of the dedication of the people who own them. Breeders took up the challenge to create a short terrier, with the purpose to be able to go in the ground and bolt the varmints out of their dens. Sometimes you have to dig down to them, because the varmint won't bolt and the terrier will not leave the side of the quarry."
Jack Russells, I have found, are intensley loyal dogs. He'll follow me around wherever I go. Whether it's the kitchen, the bedroom, in bed at night or in the living room. If I'm in the bathroom, he'll sit outside the door and wait for me to emerge (in my case, it could be a very long time sometimes!!). He'll be sitting there with his ears pricked up!
He likes to chew and gnaw. Oh boy, you should see what he's done to my armchair and numerous other items in my flat! He's pulled bits off the mattress, gnawed through wires and cables and other bits of my furniture! When I'm sitting in my chair, he likes to grap hold of my shoe or trousers, shake his head and growl and pull like nothing on earth! He's got plenty of toys which I get from the Charity shops for him. He'll rip the stuffing out of them and play with them for hours. He likes to swing them round the living room.
Another thing I've found about him is he's very, very nosey! I have an armchair under the window (the one he's bitten through!), and he jumps up on that, get on the window sill, gets his head under the net curtains, and sits there for ages looking out of the window. He'll bark at people going past or birds landing on the grass outside.
Yes, barking is another thing of him. He's such a talkative little boy. He'll bark at me if I tell him off, he'll bark at people going past outside, and he'll bark at me if I'm going out somewhere! The funniest thing is he'll jump up and bite my flatmate's butt when he's getting his coat on! He'll nip his butt! Of course, I find this extremely funny, and always surprises me how high he can jump!
He's very good at night though. As soon as I go to bed, he'll join me. We'll have a little play, then once the lights are out, Ollie is as good as gold. He'll stay in bed with me all night untill I get up the following morning.
When I'm out with him, he loves playing with other dogs. He gets on really well with them. He loves to play with them, however big or small they are. He's never attempted to snap or bite another dog, and is always so eager to approach them and have a sniff.
With other people he's great, especially children. He loves playing with children. Whenever I take him into town, he loves people approaching him and making a fuss of him. He loves kissing them and vise versa!
When it comes to food, he's a very fussy eater. I'm certainly not saying this about all Jack Russell's, just mine! He won't eat tinned dog food, and he won't eat the doggie chocolates. I feed him on Baker's complete for puppy/junior or small adult dogs. He'll eat this alright. He'll also eat chicken/turkey and other meats, although I have to make sure these are cut up in tiny little pieces or else he won't eat it! He's a very particular dog!
In summary, he's a hardy little dog. He answers back when I tell him off, he's feisty, loving, loyal and has a lovely tempremant! I wouldn't be without him now!
Advantages: Will keep you laughing for hours Disadvantages: Can get abit tempermental
The Jack Russell Terrier takes its name from the Reverend John Russell who bred one of the finest breads of terriers for fox hunting.

You cant let him see you get a pair of socks out because he'll take them, he spends alot of the running from one end of the room to the other, he desperately seeks attention by barking and if that fails he will lightly bite or scratch you. He gets extremely excited when visitors come. ( This can be too much as he jumps all over them, but aslong as they take the time to give him abit of attention ...

~ ~ I don't like Jack Russell Terriers me, or should I say I didn't like Jack Russell Terriers up until relatively recently.
~ ~ There was good reason for my dislike of Jacks, and I'm fairly sure the dislike was mutual, as they didn't seem to get along with me either.
My first experience of Jacks was back when I was only a slip of a lad in the early 1970's, and newly moved down to the Home Counties from Scotland to take up a new job as a salesman. ... ...A mixture of aggressive wee Jack Russells, and an equally aggressive wee tanked up Scotsman was a sight to behold, and many times the whole apartment block would be awoken from their slumber by World War 3 breaking out in the courtyard! ~ ~ I didn't come across Jacks again for quite a few years after this, or rather should I say I actually avoided them like the plague. For most of the time, they ...

...me. My friends name is Jack and he’s a tri coloured Jack Russell Terrier.
Now a lot of people are very weary of Jack Russell’s simple because they seem to have a bad press, which is not really warranted as with almost all dogs they are as trust worthy as the people who handle them.

I've chosen to review the Jack Russell terrier as I feel that they deserve the time, many people (including myself and my family until about three years ago)! see these dogs as yappy, annoying little creatures that only seem to ever get under your feet, but in fact I have found that this could not possibly be further from the truth. **************HOW IT ALL BEGAN**************

*****************PERSONALITY****************
The Jack Russell terriers are renowned for their yappy and irritating personalities however there is also a very different side to them, I must point out though that our little man is actually a parson Terrier and for this reason there are small differences however they are largely the same. Although the terrier is yappy they make excellent guard dogs for this reason, they are also however ...

...Labrador section!), I own a Jack Russell Terrier dog.
He was bought from a local litter for £80. Of all the pups in the litter, this one was the smallest.
Now JRT's are normally small, but mine just about takes the biscuit! At six years old, people are still mistaking him for a puppy.

My JR makes a wonderful burgular alarm. Their hearing is so acute that they don't miss much. This, however, can be a bit of a downfall when they start to bark at anything going on outside.
In terms of temperament, Jack Russell's are generally kind-hearted, but can be easily ...

I have two dogs ? Katy is an old and ailing JackRussellterrier crossed with a Chihuahua, while Pixie is a three-year-old JackRussellterrier crossed with a Bichon Frise. They both have different dietary needs ? Katy eats Senior wet dog food, while Pixie is on the Adult stage.
However, they are both fine with the same treats. We usually buy a bag of both Rewards and Allsorts each week. Both of these are made by Bakers which is part of the Purina company.
I like having different treats to give to the dogs, so they don?t get bored. A pack of Rewards costs me £1.89 for a 126g, while the Allsorts cost me £1.79 for 140g. I find the Allsorts last longer, as there are more of them and smaller, so they seem better value to me than the Rewards.
The Allsorts come in a bright blue bag, which is colourful and eye-catching, with its ...

No way would i give my Jackrusselterrier anything other to eat but Pedigree chum it looks great and dont smell the house out which after trying almost evelything a dog can possible eat its the most non smelling food out which is great if your house is like mine and on the market so you dont have to waste time moving the dog food to place to place which is often the case with other dog food's
There is never one scrap of food left in his bowl out of the dried food and canned food which proves to me that its the best around after all he is extreemly fussy about what he eats and what he dont eat so you can always be shure if its realy what dogs want to eat
The bigger tins work out cheaper than the smaller buts its 100% good value in evely way

I have a JackRussellterrier and a Doberman (strange combination I know) and both of them have been brought up on the beta range starting with beta puppy and moving on up to beta bravo which is one in the wide range of adult foods. The thing I like about the Beta range is that it is available in small bags right up to 15 ? 20kg bags depending on which one you buy. It is a dry food however you can mix a little water with it depending on your dog?s taste. Both my dogs have done extremely well on it and people often comment on how shiny their coats are. I feel this is one of the best foods around and is very reasonably priced compared to some of the other top brands. I would strongly recommend Beta dried dog food as the range caters right through from the puppy to the overweight elderly dog. ...
