Ok, so these things are nothing new, in fact they I have been nibbling on twiglets since I was knee high to a grass hopper, but its time they got more recognition, these things have been about for ages, they are a great snack, crunchy, full flavoured, reasonably priced and come bags you can actually fit your hand into and yet they are still shoved out of sight in super markets, always left to be eaten last at parties when all other nibbley bits are gone, they are not known to my spell check and there were only a few reviews written about then when they were loads of reviews about crisp's (a word my spell check does know)
History Before writing this I looked on the internet to get some information, like
when they first appeared, who thought of them, who eats them? And do you know what I found? Nothing. These things just came from nowhere, maybe they fell from out of space and landed on the shelves at Asda, There is no other explanation any where. I'm not kidding ive looked and found nothing at all, ive read all the info on the packet and there is no indication of where the first twiglets came from. I can tell you they are made by The Jacob's Bakery Ltd the address is P.O. Box 14 Liverpool l97JK UK an they are imported by Menorah Foods pty ltd 1695 centre road Springvale Victoria 3171 Australia. And there is a customer care line 08081449454 (I am actually considering ringing this number and asking but think that might be a bit sad) Any way it doesn't matter where they come from the fact is they are here, and I love them.
Packaging They come in a black bag with the red Twiglets logo on the front surrounded by a blue ring that will tell you the flavour (they come in curry, original and wouster sauce). The message on the front boats "a whole lot of crunch in a whole wheat much" as if that's not enough they also boast to be Bake not fried, only 97 cals per 25g, 3.1g fat per 25g and they are high in fibre (yes eat a full 150g bag of these an you will be on the toilet for two days) On the back of the packet is this message "Totally original entertain your senses! Only twiglets give you that distinctive knobbly shape combined with a zingy taste and crunchy bite for all round sensual satisfaction" (Crikey almost sounds better then a night in with Johnny Depp!)
Taste The taste is… different….tangy…. indescribable! I really don't now how to describe them. People say they taste like marmite but I hate marmite an I love twiglets, as I sit here licking the brown crumbs from my fingers an feeling the flavour hit my tongue causing my saliva glands to explode, I still cant put the taste to words. They are zingy I guess. All I can say is try one and see what you think.
Look Ok they are no the most attractive of snacks, they are not round like crisps, or cylinder like wotsits or colourful or pretty in any way, in fact it is fair to say they look like E.T'S Fingers. remember that scene when he points an say's "E.T phone home" picture that finger he is pointing with… can you picture it?… well that's what a twiglet looks like.
