Advantages Taste Quite Nice, Good Value For Money
Disadvantages Lots Of Calories
I'm sure that there will be quite a few people out there like myself who can remember the adverts in the early 1980's for Jacob's Club Biscuit Bars, you know the ones which featured various groups of kids singing "If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit join our club."
When I was growing up there wasn't a lot of Chocolate in our House, hard to believe I know judging by the number of Chocolate reviews that I have written for Ciao, but I only became a Chocoholic in recent years. One Chocolate Bar that did however find its way into our House on a fairly regular basis were Club Biscuits, as these were about the only Chocolate Bars that my Parents liked.THE BACKGROUND
Jacob's launched their Club Biscuits back in the 1960's and a clever advertising campaign that followed ensured that they quickly established themselves as a leading brand.Originally launched in just Orange flavour they soon launched a Mint flavoured Biscuit too to cash in on the success of the Orange ones and in more recent years further flavours have been added to the range such as Milk Chocolate, Raisin, and Fruit.
These days Jacobs have been absorbed into the huge French food giant Danone but they have retained their original identity.THE PRODUCT
This particular review is based on the Mint flavoured variety which are usually sold in packets of seven Bars for around 89 pence a time. The Mint Club Biscuits come packaged in a green plastic wrapper with the word "Club" written across the front in large capital letters that take up the majority of the space on the front.
Inside this wrapper each individual Biscuit is wrapped in silver foil and then encased within a green and white coloured paper sleeve that bears the same design as the outer wrapper.APPEARANCE & TASTE
On removing the silver foil wrapper the Chocolate Club Bar inside is rectangular in shape with the "Club" logo embossed on the top of it in thick lettering made of the same Milk Chocolate that covers the rest of the Biscuit. There is quite a strong smell of Mint but only a faint whiff of the Milk Chocolate itself even when you put it quite close to your nose.
Biting into the Biscuit the first thing that I noticed was that the layer of Chocolate itself was nice and thick, and overhung the end the Biscuit inside on all sides. The first taste that hits you is that of the Milk Chocolate but this is unfortunately not the best quality Chocolate and although it is sweet it lacks the rich creamy taste that I associate with good quality Chocolate like Cadbury's or Galaxy. Beneath the Chocolate there is a thin, hard white layer of Mint flavouring and this adds a nice refreshing kick to the taste that combines with the Chocolate quite well and provides a cool, sharp taste of Mint that reminded me of a Viscount Biscuit.
The Biscuit itself is hard and crunchy and gives a slightly more savoury feel, but as you chomp into it this also has a Mint flavour to it, albeit a rather a subtle one.Sometimes I like to suck the Chocolate off the Biscuit part and separate the flavours and it is only when you do this that you realise that the Biscuit itself is rather bland with a slight bitter taste of Oats and Wholemeal.
