Jaguar XJ XJR 4.2 V8 Supercharged

Advantages: Speed, handling, ride, class, looks.
Disadvantages: Brakes, fuel consumption.

...1995 Jaguar XJR S/C. I bought this car when it was two years old from a dealer, the interior had the optional doe skin leather, plus an enhanced Harmen Karden sound system. The interior, while not as classy as the later V8 cars, was still a nice place to be. The sound system was amazing. My previous Jaguar XJ40 had proved surprisingly reliable, was very comfortable if a little boring. This Cat has attitude! The straight 6 supercharged engine puts out 330bhp - more impressive is the wall of torque meaning the auto box could stay locked in top whilst climbing steep inclines on virtually tickover! Off the lights the long first gear makes it brisk rather than shattering, once moving, the car is seriously quick, charging to well over 130mph without a thought. ...certainly does. Despite its 4,000-pound bulk, it'll launch itself to 60 mph in a mere 5.3 seconds, putting it well in league with competition from the likes of the $72K Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG. And acceleration isn't just brisk, it's bracing, with a gutsy wail from the supercharger and a silky baritone growl coming from the V-8. It's a potent machine, in other words, one that also manages to be quite smooth-riding despite its super-snug performance tires. You can drive this car through chicanes and asphalt undulations with ease, and even push it with a good deal of muscle. Steering is a delight, with great feedback and increasing effort at speed. Still, when you really start to muscle the big XJ around, it shows both its mass and its age. ...Anyone whos driven an xjr will tell you exactly the same - its fan - bleedin - tastic. Anyone who says the British Car Industries goin down the pan should try this. What is best about this car is that it cna do so much - from blitzing merc's and beemers on the autobahn at 150mph, to purring silently around town, the superchanrged 4.0 v8 is fantastic. It feels incredibly sporty with tight suspension, but drive down a familiar road, and you'll wonder if the council has smoothed out the holes - the suspension is a masterpiece. I'm hard pushed to think of a better way to spend 50 grand.... Read review
