It's that time of year again. Oh yes, you may know that this weekend, the hustle and bustle of the Formula one circus gets underway down under this weekend (or tomorrow to be exact). But this isn't about the race - that will be posted this week, so look out for it - but on a team who, I have to say have been the most disappointing outfit on the F1 grid.
What am I talking about?
The Jaguar team. Since it's 2000 debut, the team have really struggled to do anything more than struggle and struggle.
But it shouldn't be like this as I'll explain...
THE START OF A HAPPY TEAM
Before Jaguar were created, another team Stewart, held their name and witheld British honours after Williams. Lead by the Stewart family - Jackie and his son Paul -, the team was built from scratch. After years of supplying engines, Stewart was seen as a Ford car, with a different name, as they supplied the engines.
After several riffs with his team mate Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello was signed up from Jordan and placed as the team favourite, for the first time since his 1992 debut.
Alongside him was a man believed to be the best young driver in the world, who was described as being the next Ayrton Senna - and he was Danish. Young'un Jan Magnussen had had F1 outings before as he drove for Mclaren in 1995 at the Aida circuit and finished in the top 10. Stewart believed they were onto a winner...
THE 1997 SEASON - THEIR DEBUT SEASON AND HARD IT WAS TOO
The team were launched in a flurry of excitement, but like any other new team, they found that they needed experiance and no-one apart from Rubens Barrichello had that. Indeed, their nadir was reliability, which for much of the year was dire. Barrichello was let down several times by his engine and Jan Magnussen also had to endure a troublesome engine, but he also contributed by spinning and crashing out of many of the races. Out of their combined 34 starts, only 6 times did the white and tartan cars come close to seeing the chequered flag. There were high points though. Rubens Barrichello qualified well at several GP's but it was at a rain soaked Monaco, where things picked up. The Brazilian stayed on the track and cruised to 2nd place in only Stewarts 6th ever race - impressive stuff! But that was the only highlight as the team looked to a better 1998.
THE 1998 SEASON - NO BETTER
The team looked back on 1997 as a development year and so decided not to change anything and keep the ball rolling. Indeed, the Stewart seemed faster and Barrichello seemed to be creeping up the order, but again Magnussen was a huge disappointment. He was ousted out of the team and was replaced by Jos Verstappen. As a stand-in he was too gravel happy, and so the team concentrated on Barrichello and a 1999 season.
THE 1999 SEASON - FANTASTIC!!!!
Encouraged by their number 1 driver, Barrichello stayed for a third year and was joined by Johnny Herbert after he quit from Sauber. With reliabiltity seemingly sorted out and 2 years under their belts belt, Stewart went out with brut force, despite an ominous start. At the first race, both cars caught fire before the race and so Barrichello had to drive alone as both couldn't start. Despite starting from the pit lane and gaining 2 Stop/Go penalties he finished 5th, but had there not been problems, he'd have got his first win. The year continued well, with Barrichello leading the Brazilian GP and getting his second pole at the chaotic French GP, where anyone could have been pole. He retired in Brazil but held onto 3rd in France. Barrichello continued to overshadow his older team mate, but the Brit was helping Stewart up the manufacturers standings too. But a win wasn't theres. That was until the European GP, where everybody had a taste of the gravel trap in the bizarre weather conditions. But it was Herbert who braved the weather and scored Stewarts first ever win, instead of his team mate, who was disappointed not to get Stewarts first win. The team continued to keep up good form and finished the year in 4th place in the standings.
THE 2000 SEASON - ITS MEOW IS BIGGER THAN IT'S BITE!
After the trumendous 1999 season, Stewart transformed into Jaguar in the new millennium and expectations were high of the team. Barrichello had left for Ferrari, but Eddie Irvine, jumped from the Italians to star alongside Brit Johnny Herbert. With a very British team, Jaguar looked like being the 4th challenger at the top of the pile. Sadly it wasn't to be, as the team couldn't muster a good performance or a point, apart from the excellent 3rd place at Monaco. It was a massive comedown for a team who were dubbed as the team who was to take Britain to the top of the F1 tree.
Things got worse. Boss Paul Stewart was diagnosed from cancer and subsequently left the team and was replaced by his father for the rest of the season, but troubles were seeping in as the car got more and more unreliable and Eddie Irvine made his feelings felt, but as no-one else seemed to want him, he stayed on for the 2001 season...
THE 2001 SEASON - EDDIE SOUND OFF - AGAIN
After a troublesome 2000 season, Jaguar, with new boss Bobby Rahal, looked set for a major overhaul at the but things didn't get better. Irvine was joined by Luciano Burti, but problems with the car were immediately apparent when Burti crashed his R2 twice heavily.
The team struggled and they weren't helped by fighting at the top between Rahal and Niki Lauda. Rahal left after the arguments spiralled and went back to the USA.
The driver line-up too was changing, with Burti sacked and replaced by their test driver Pedro De La Rosa. Irvine, after some good performances though, remained unreliable and was soon out qualified many times by his new team mate. Irvine scored again at Monaco and De La Rosa did the same at Canada, but the car was off the pace throughout the year.
Despite this, the drivers Irvine and De La Rosa signed another contract for 2002, but things have to improve.
THE 2002 SEASON - THINGS MUST IMPROVE
We haven't even finished a race yet, but already the Jaguar team look to be fledging. The loss of rivals Prost and the gaining of Toyota have pushed the team down the order in testing. Not helped by the loss of their technical director, a motor-mouth Irvine and having to re-design the front end of the car with just 3 weeks before the start of the season has not boded well. Indeed, the Jaguars are way off the pace. 19th and 20th for Irvine and De La Rosa respectivly are the best they can do.
WHAT DO I THINK...
I think the Jaguar team were flawed. Several said they were a new team and needed time, but they were just renamed. How can a team dip so much in form after winters testing?
My biggest problem is Irvine. He continues to say nice things then bad things, which is damaging their reputation as a team.
Niki Lauda seems to be a good boss though. He is realistic aimer and apprecites the problems in the team.
Pedro De La Rosa is a very underrated driver. He debuted in 1999 as a back runner, but in 2000 the improved Arrows saw him storm up the grid. He ran third in 3 GP's and was only let down by the cars unreliability which is a shame. He is a good driver. He drove well last year, finishing 5th in Monza ahead of several people, including his team mate.
OVERALL
Jaguar need to do well this year if they want to carry on. Ford are at the moment in a cash crisis and if things continue as they are, I could see them pulling the plug as an unnessacary waste of money. I believe they should get rid of Irvine. He hasn't done the team any good and I think he is very overrated. Lauda seems a good boss, but he knows he needs to succeed.
And if the rumours are true, that Prost are coming back in a couple of races as the 12th team, Jaguar could find themselves battling to stay off the bottom of the grid.
Thanks for reading (look out for that Aussie GP op in a couple of days)

Advantages: ? Disadvantages: They made so much of their entrance and fell flat on their faces
Jaguar did terribly in there first season in F1, unfortunately the second year looks to be going the same way. Last year Jaguar had problems with there combined gearbox and engine oil system which prevented them from doing a lot of the preseason setup work which is essential for a good start. The combined oil system had been tried before by other teams but with no success, but Jaguar still decided to commit to using this in a race even though they ... ...team said to me that Jaguar is now getting a reputation amongst the other pitlane personnel for loosing staff left right and center. Experienced people from other teams who would step in and replace these people are becoming increasingly reluctant to even consider Jaguar as an option.
I wont be betting on who’s going to come first in this years constructors championship’s, there is a much safer bet on who will come last.
Are we going ...

...with much enthusiasm for the Jaguar team! Finally for once we have a team which can represent Britain, rather like Ferrari does Italy! I know that on the whole the jaguar team is owned by and American company, but hey 'what is'nt'! I think that Mclaren is just a German company now, and Jordan is more Irish. So we are left with Jaguar and Williams and quite frankly, the Jag car is far more sexy!!!!

The Jaguar Cosworth team entered the world of Formula I admist very high expectations yet so far in the current season their results have been disappointing. Coupled with that has been more than their share of bad luck exemplified by the Austrian grand prix where at the last moment Eddie Irvine was taken ill with suspected appendicitis and had to be substituted by young Luciano Burti. This is the official magazine of the Jaguar Racing Team. I think this magazine is brilliant for fans of the team or their two drivers, Johnny Herbert and Eddie Irvine. The magazine is published monthly and it contains features about the development of the team and has had interviews with various key figures at Jaguar Racing. There are also articles on the drivers as well other more general features to do with Formula 1. This magazine is definitely a must-have for all Jaguar fans and it is also something that I think any Formula 1 fan will enjoy. ...

Advantages: Reasonable experience. Disadvantages: Inconsistent. Not quick. Poor in qualifying.
It seems Alexander Wurz is unlikely to be with Benetton for next season. The team has been very disappointed with the lanky Austrian's performance -his qualifying times have been pretty abysmal,he seems to lack confidence and has not been doing justice to his team. The team are rumoured to have been seeking alternatives to Wurz. Names mentioned include Benetton test driver Antonio Pizzonia -but he has been deemed a year or so away from being ready for FI racing- and that of the brilliant young British driver Jenson Button, who has also been linked to Jaguar.
Things look a bit bleak for Wurz. With the exception perhaps of a possible move to the Sauber team- as current driver Mika Salo is said to be moving to Toyota as its development driver in preparation for entry into Formula I in 2002- Alexander could well find himself without a drive ...
