Advantages taste fairly nice, not too sweet, work well, affordable

Disadvantages a little too much menthol for my tastes

Some time ago I read a review of Jakemans Blueberry Menthol Sweets and wanted to give them a try. Sadly when I went to the supermarket there were no Blueberry available, but all was not lost because there were some Cherry ones (normally my favourite cough drop flavour).

These sweets come in a lovely deep red bag with white lettering. There were 15 individually wrapped sweets in my 100g bag. I found the sweets stuck slightly to their clear plastic wrappers, but not too badly. The sweets are hard cylindrical ovals roughly 3cm long, 1.5cm wide and 1cm high. They are red and slightly sticky to the touch. They smell sweet, but not particularly of cherries.

When I put one in my mouth the first thing I taste is the sweet cherry candy flavour which is very pleasant. They are sweet, but not overly so. After a few seconds the menthol flavour comes through and continues to build. Soon the bitterness of the menthol dominates the flavour. You can still detect the cherry sweetness, but it is in the background. The first time I tried these, I didn’t like them much. I’ll admit I’m a bit of a wimp on nasty tasting medicine. I prefer the menthol to be a bit more subtle. However, I soon adapted to the flavour and now like them quite a lot. However, I’m not sure most children could be convinced to use these. The menthol does certainly help clear your airways (both nose and throat) and sooth a sore throat. I find them particularly good at combating the rough sandpaper throat I often get as I’m started to get a bit better.

The shape of the sweet is quite comfortable in my mouth. It wears down very smoothly and at no point do the sweets develop sharp edges (as I find Halls, Lockets, and Ricola are prone to do). They last a nice long time (about 20 minutes).

I bought my bag of Jakemans Cherry Menthol Sweets for 56p from Tesco. I have also seen them on offer there for 2 for £1. They are also available at places like Sainsbury’s, Asda, Superdrug and Boots.

All in all I’m very pleased with Jakeman’s Cherry Menthol Sweets. They taste reasonably nice and work well. They are also quite affordable.
