I first came across these throat and chest sweets a few years ago whilst suffering from the most annoying ratteling chest cough and sore throat I can remember. It was the year of the bird flu epidemic and although I hadn't had bird flu my symptoms seemed to last for ever and everywhere I went I noticed other people were coughing and wheezing too.
Whilst shopping in Morrisons I saw these on the shelves where the sweets were, they stood out as they were in a black packet and I remember thinking they didn't look attractive, but were a simple design just saying throat and cheat sweets on the front. Well, I only paid 79p for them as I was willing to try anything to ease the fits of coughing I was having at the time.
The bags are 100g packets and you get around 15 sweets in each pack. Each sweet is individually wrapped to keep them fresh and to stop them from sticking together in the packet. The sweets are black in colour and the menthol smell when you open them is quite strong. The sweets are made from Menthol, Eucalyptus and Aniseed Oil and the taste is quite unique, they are a strong menthol taste when you first pop them into your mouth and this helps to unblock your nose within a few minutes, if your suffering from a bad cold.
The sweets disolve slowly and although they do taste like cough tablets they really do work. These sweets will stop a rasping cough dead in it's tracks. I was surprised and happy to see that for 79p these worked really well. I have spent loads of money on cough medicine, other throat tablets and soothers all to no avail, then my 79p impulse buy got me the relief I was looking for I was amazed. They soothed the buring in my throat and stopped the cough.
They don't stop you coughing straight away but will disolve slowly and soothe the symptoms of a chesty cough and sore throat quickly and within a few hours time you will notice that you haven't coughed for a while. Eating these like sweets isn't good as they are a medicine so have to be kept out of small childrens way and I'm not really sure why the supermarket has it on the same shelf as the sweets. I have one sweet every two or three hours and the symptoms ease quickly, they help you stop coughing or having fits of coughing and this helps you at night too. I was waking up in the middle of the night having a coughing fit and with these within reach of the night table I just grabbed one and waited until they began to do their magic, so I could get back to sleep.
I now buy these anytime I feel a slight cough coming on as they shift it and make breathing easier. I won't buy anything else now as once I find something that actually works I will stick with it. I can't see the point of buying lots of other cough sweets and medicines that only ease the syptoms for a bit, I want something that works and these sweets are amazingly good at stopping you coughing when you need them too.
I have given these to friends and family when they have had a cough and have even given them to my customers who came in browsing when I ran a YMCA charity shop, after all if something really wiorks and is cheap enough to buy why not tell everyone about it. I'd highly recommend these if you have a cough and you can buy them in Morrisons, Asda, Tesco's and other supermarkets, but you'll find then in the sweets aisle not the medicine aisle.
They are suitable for vegetarians and have no artificial colours or flavourings.
