Background The game follows the story of the two Daniel Craig James Bond movies, it starts off with Quantum of Solace and after a bit of this film you then return via a flashback to the story of Casino Royale, before returning to Quantum of Solace. The game sticks roughly to the story of the films yet there are added and removed bits in order to make it more action packed. The basic story is told though gameplay but cutscenes/briefings are also used in order to expand on the story. The Special edition also contains clips on the blu ray of the making of the game, which is an enjoyable piece of extra content.
Presentation and gameplay The graphics of the game are quite good, theyre nothign special but they certainly aren't bad. The game uses the likeness and voices of the main characters from the films which helps to immerse you further in the Bond experience. The characters also deliver classic lines from the film, so you feel as if you are part of the film. The game uses a first
person/over-the-shoulder (when in cover) camera and this further increases the feel that you are actually in the film. Bond music is also played, and the sound in the game is very good. It is an action based shooter with very little puzzling or strategy involved, you play thorugh a level and any "find this" objectives are very easy as there is a compass that will direct you to the objective. However this does not make the game easy, the enemies are quite hard to defeat and are quite intelligent. They will attempt to flank you (which makes it very difficult to survive if there are many enemies) and I found the Agent (and 007) difficulties challenging in a good way as there were no incredibly frustrtatingly difficult moments, just a challenging game (I first played it on "Agent", yet the 4 difficulty levels means anyone can enjoy the game). The enemies also try and shoot you as they go down so skill is required in order to deliver a head shot to prevent this. One problem I did have with the enemies was that a lot of them looked the same, although the main characters are distinct the minions oftern seemed to look very similar, although not as bad as in "Uncharted", however this is only a very minor problem.
The cover system in this game is quite simply near-perfection. You find cover, you can look out to aim acurately or you can spray bullets out without aiming and hope to hit an enemy, obviously this decreases accuracy but also decreases the chance of you getting shot; this seems to be used in many shooters now and I find that it is a great cover method, maybe the only way to improve it would be to not be able to see around the corners unless you look, incerasing the risk, but the system used here is fun and useful. The enemies also seek cover and will "spray" instead of targetting sometimes too, so you have to be careful that there are no more enemies left behind cover, and can't go all gung-ho on them thinking that they must come out to shoot you, as they will spray bullets and present only a very small target.
There are loads of trophies to unlock, you unlock them for completing the game, for completing levels etc. (I did like the fact that by completing the game on agent you also unlock the trophies for the lower difficulty levels, which means you don't have to play through the game again to unlock trophies when you have already done this at a higher difficulty). There are also trophies for completing missions in a certain way or performing certain things, if you find all phones (which contain useful information on the mission) then you get a trophy, if you go thorugh the freight train using only the P99 you get a trophy, and this makes the game quite fun as these are oftern quite diffuclt to do.
The online mode is fun, there are the usual type of matches that you see in shooters, and I have found that play is generally lag free and there seems to be, even now, plenty of players online to play against.
Overall The game is entertaining, challenging and offers a decent online mode to increase the longevity. the special edition also has some nice extra features and you don't need to be a bond fan to enjoy the game. The graphics could be better, and it isn't groundbreaking stuff, but that didn't hamper my enjoyment of it
