I first started using James Wellbeloved when one of my shelties developed an unknown food intollerance, causing severe collitis. The vet had put her on a prescription diet but she wasnt enjoing it at all, I had to find something she could enjoy. When J.W was suggested to me I was a little concerned about the price but it was no more expensive than the prescription diet so decided to give it a try.
J.W is hypoallergenic, addressing digestive problems as well as skin conditions which often flare up as a result of food ingredients. J.W contains no beef, pork, soya, wheat, gluten, dairy or eggs, which can all be associated with such problems.
I usually buy the lamb & rice or ocean white fish & rice though there is also turkey and duck both with rice and there is a lamb & vegetable variety too. The main ingredient accounts for roughly 21- 25% of the contents, other ingredients include brown and pearl rice, barley, sugar beet pulp (some varieties ) Antioxidants such as alfalfa andnatural seaweed which is rich in iodine. Yucca, a natural deodoriser even reduces the smell of the dogs faeces ! the chicory is to maintain healthy gut flora , these along anawith all the essential vitamins and minerals provide the recipe for optimum health.
J.W can be fed throughout the dogs life stages from puppy through to senior, theres also larger kibbles suitable for giant breeds. The puppy / performance is a tiny kibble easily soaked and mashed up into a poridge for weaning puppies and has aprotein level of around 30%. There is a junior / performance which I cant really comment on as having a small breed, they can easily go straight onto adult at 12 months. The adult food is about 20% protein and the senior varieties 18%.
The food is sold in 2kg bags costing around £7.30, depending on the age / stage the puppy / performance is slightly dearer than senior and the senior usually dearer than adult. there is a 7.5kg size bag and a 15kg bag which will cost around £39. It is readily available though not in supermarkets.
The kibble can be fed dry which is better for the dogs teeth, if you do add water dont add much as it dosnt take much to make it soggy though if your dog is a toothless geriatric it may prefer it that way. My own dogs are fed twice a day, their breakfastis fed dry and their main meal has a splash of water this is because I add garlic powder once a day to help prevent worms and fleas, the water allows the powder to be absorbed into the kibble so its not left behind in the dish.
As my dogs compete in agility, it is very important they stay in great shape and maintain fitness throughout the season. Other foods Ive tried them on have caused weight gain which ultimately slows them down apart from any other issues to do with being over weight. J.W is the best food Ive found to keep my dogs fit and healthy.
I have tried variou hypoallergenic foods claiming similar testomonies to J.W but for one reason or another I always come back to J.W It may be pricey but after all you really do only get what you pay for.
