Brilliant cook book for beginners

Advantages: Easy to follow, great recipes, not too many ingredients.
Disadvantages: None

I really enjoyed this book, I never saw the TV series, but the idea of one of the best chef's in the country creating a book to help anyone cook using normal ingredients rather than some of the more expensive ones really appealed to me, so I bought the book, at the time I got it for £8 in Tesco's.

It actually retails for £25 but you can generally buy it for £12.50 in most high street retailers.

The idea of the book ...
...or take aways and wants to empower the nation to be able to cook filling healthy meals for the whole family, to tackle obesity and the unhealthy lifestyles we face. He wants everybody to pass on a recipe to a friend or family member and therefore develop a network where everyone in the country can cook at least one or two meals really well.

Published very recently the book is inspired by the original Ministry of Food which ran during ... more

From Mess to Chef in 24 hours...Jamie's Ministry of Food

Advantages: No jargon, useful pictures, descriptive recipes
Disadvantages: A little pricey, large book.

...My fella bought me Jamie's Ministry of Food because I, quite famously, can't cook. I'll give anything a go if I have a recipe in front of me, but I think I'm lacking technique or something because all my efforts never quite look (or taste) like the book tells me it should. Except cakes. For some reason I'm a dab hand with cakes. Go figure.... Anyway, this food bible has been siting our bookshelf for about 6 months and I thought I'd better open it ...
...cook something other than Victoria Sponge in 24 hours. I must admit to being somewhat sceptical - how can someone so obviously competant as Jamie Oliver write intructions for someone so culinary-challenged as myself? Here's how.... There is a contents page. This is your quick guide to where everything is and it means you can skip straight to the cooking bit without reading the introduction or 'essentials' section. Although from experience, it pays ...

Pass it on...or not

Advantages: Simple, basic recipe book
Disadvantages: Condescending

...huge surprise to many of Jamie's loyal followers that BOTH gas and electricity were available in the poor North - I'm sure they were expecting coal fires, mines and tripe for tea.....NB I am from the North myself and live in the South so please don't get all 'regional' on me........I am not being regionalist! The book opens with a dedication to Marguerite Paton, one of the original Ministry of Food* girls and known to the older ones as amongst as ...
...up' your soup (you see, Jamie's down with kids, in the groove, talking the talk etc). Of course, it wouldn't be complete with the Homely Mince chapter - recipes burgers, meatballs, minced beef Wellington (hmm sort of a mince pie really), lasagna, mince pie (again) and also, of course, Chilli Con Carne. A real seventies sort of chapter. Another chapter is devoted to stews - well, in fact one page covers stews - a basic stew recipe and then a choice ...

Pukka grub!

Advantages: Simple, unfussy 'proper' meals
Disadvantages: Maybe too simple for the accomplished cook?

Jamie's Dinners was first published in 2004 and, as with most of Jamie's books, it was accompanied by a complimentary BBC series which focussed on a slection of recipes from the book, delivered in Jamie's characteristic fashion. It is squarely aimed at the average family and aims to provide unfussy meals which can be recreated at home without any hassle, special techniques or hard-to-find ingredients. The book is logically divided into 11 main chapters ...
...imagine - unpretentiously and with Jamie's usual charm. Directions are simple and straightforward and even a novice like me had fun preparing the recipes. A large format book, Jamie's Dinners, The Essential Family Cookbook is currently available through Amazon for £18.99 in hardback or £8.61 for the softback version which I own and which feels like it will last. For anyone who would like to improve their diet by cooking simple(ish) meals at home, ...

Great book for people with varying cooking skills

Advantages: excellent pictures and instructions
Disadvantages: bit pricy at face value

...start of the book has Jamie's speel with hopes of getting you to teach a recipe to someone (pledge) and the usual pictures and info about kitchen equipment to use. Then it moves onto the various chapters which covers just about every range of needs from 'twenty minute meals', 'quick pasta', 'easy curries', 'family roasts', 'sweet things' etc. Each chapter has many recipes, each with details of ingredients, step by step instructions as well as Jamies ...
...double page spread, the information on the right, lots of pictures showing each stage on the left. ***MY GOOD POINTS The has the nice touch of mini blogs from people around the UK who have learnt to cook with Jamie; their history of cooking, careers and comments. The book is in hard back quality and despite a few splashes of grease going on the pages, the quality of paper has keep this book looking its best. The book is really easy to follow and ...

You too can cook like Jamie - Jamies Ministry Of Food

Advantages: Easy recipes to follow, healthy
Disadvantages: Can need a lot of ingredients

...are taught some simple recipes. Jamie's vision is that if he teaches some people recipes and they teach two people and they teach two people and so on then everyone would learn to cook. It is a good idea although I am not sure will work. Anyway the book is a hard covered book, which is fairly large although not too heavy so can be easily carried around. The front cover shows Jamie sat with a plate in front of him. At the top is the title of the book ...
...The introduction talks about Jamie's plan, which is the pass it on plan. He also talks about how The Ministry of Food was so important during the war and should be reinstated. There is even a page where you can sign a pledge to say you will pass the recipes on. He also states where you can sign up online. The essentials section lists the different type of kitchen equipment that you are going to need. There is quite a lot on this list but most people ...
