This is my first machine as I started sewing about 3 months ago. I cannot praise this machine enough - it's an entry model yet incorporates so many features including 18 stitches, 4 step auto buttonhole and really simple threading guide. On first opening this machine, I used the clearly written instruction manual and was sewing in no time. The instructions are step by step and I quickly learnt how to thread the needle and the bobbin to start sewing. It's a really sturdy machine and I have found it really easy to master, as well as sort out any tangles and problems. It is pedal operated, with a nice long lead that stretches comfortably to nearby plug sockets. The cable leading from the machine to the pedal is also long enough to work comfortably at a standard table height.
Now that I have been sewing for a few months I have found that I am using more features on the machine. Also, the fact that my experience is growing means that I can assess this machine even more. As I have improved to make my own handbags, clothes and even Christmas decorations I have found that this machine provides everything I need. It has a great thread tension dial, which I can change depending on the type of fabric I am using. When I first started I was using simple polycottons but now I am using heavy corduroys, canvas as well as other weighted fabrics and the Janome J3-18 handles all very compentently. It doesn't struggle and sews with ease and perfect stitching (pending on the user!!).
I have also found the machine really easy in terms of changing the feet - it's very simple to change from standard to zipper foot, to button hole foot. It is also really easy to change a needle or alter the position of the zipper foot, as the machine supplies its own mini screw-driver.
Another great thing about this machine is it's weight. It's fairly light and I carry it to my sewing class without any struggle.
I would definitely recommend the Janome J3-18 to anyone looking to buy their first sewing machine, or anyone looking to get back into sewing. I am improving in my ability all the time but I won't be changing my machine for a long time - it's got everything I need!
