The jasmines are renowned for the strong fragrance of the flowers of many species, although the winter jasmine, so often grows as a winter-flowering, hardy climber, has yellow flowers which are scentless.
Jasminium officinale is the most well known and most often grown. Its white flowers appear from early summer right through to autumn, on a plant which can climb to 10 feet and which is hardy in sheltered gardens. Jasminium polyanthum flowers from mid winter onwards, and its pink flowers are deliciously scented,
The jasmines are not truly evergreen, although they may not drop all their leaves when grown in the home. This plant needs protection all year round. when grown in the garden. They grow very fast, and need plenty of space and supports, they also need as much light as possible all year round. Temperatures need not be high at any time and in winter they can drop to 40 farenheight or even lower for Jasminium officinales and 45 farenheight for Jasminium polyanthum, raising it a little as the flowering begins.
Normal summer temperatures will be satisfactory. Use a standard potting compost and feed at regular intervals in summer with a potash high fertilizer.
The jasmines will be much in need of pruning if they are to be kept under control in the home. The best time to do this is after flowering has nearly finished. In late summer for Jasminium officinales. Remove the shoots which have flowered and cut some of the others back to keep them within the space available. Jasminium polyanthum should be cut back in the same way when flowering has finished, some time in spring, so that the rest of the growing season in which to produce new shoots for the next flowering season.
If you are growing a jasmine indoors and it does not flower, but gets very lanky, the cause may be lack of light, too much warmth or not enough food, through lack of liquid feed or the use of worn-out composts.
Watch out for red spider mites especially if the atmosphere is dry. The cure is to supply humidity and put outdoors occasionally in summer showers.
