<Background>
Jean Alesi was born named Gianni as his Father was Italian but growing up in France meant he was teazed at an early age so his mother (French) renamed him Jean to keep the locals happy. His Father owned a car repair shop, where when Jean was 15 he did his work experience. After which Jean became obsessed with cars and had the idea of following his dads footsteps and start Racing.
The man who never recieved the rewards that he deserved. This man gave it his all and yet failed to pick up a championship. Whats even more unbelieveable is that he only won a single Grand Prix in his 11 year quest for the crown. Despite this Jean Alesi is still rated as one of the top 50 drivers ever to have competed in the top ranks of Motorsport, i.e Formula One. In my eyes though he stands in the top five as one of the Greats.
Meeting Jean Alesi
I have been a fan of Jean Alesi for years and I have been to a few British Grand Prix. But I am also in his fan clun and had the pleasure of meeting him at Silverstone for a track day out. He actually paid for the meal for me and the other fans and lots of Drink. We had a few chats and i think he is just the greatest person. He loves talking to the fans because he knows how much we love him. I have had a few pictures of me taken with him. Also at Silverstone one year he remembered my name when i was in the Paddock. ( how good was that ) Its a shame he isn't in F1 anymore because he really is exciting to watch.
<Background> Jean Alesi was born named Gianni as his Father was Italian but growing up in France meant he was teazed at an early age so his mother (French) renamed him Jean to keep the locals happy. His Father owned a car repair shop, where when Jean was 15 he did his work experience. After which Jean became obsessed with cars and had the idea of following his dads footsteps and start Racing.
Alesi's first experience of racing was in 1983 when he raced in the Renault 5 Turbo cup in France. Alesi secured one win and finished seventh in the championship, wasn't bad since he missed one race. ( And i must admit i haven't a clue why he missed that race, it might have been due to lack of funds as it was at the beggining of the season.
Then the next two years he competed in the Formula Renault Turbo series, not having that much success with only 5 podiums, Jean Alesi decided to go into different things. French Formula Three which was a very big step forward and in his first season he came second in the Championship with 7 podiums 2 of which were wins and a few poles and fastest laps. In his second season he became champion and dominated the field.
In 1988 Jean Alesi was Scouted by Eddie Jordan ( The Manager of Jordan Grand Prix Team) who at this time owned a team in F3000 not F1 at this time. Jean Alesi had no way of tralleling to the races and didn't know much English, So Eddie offered him a place at his home where he could stay and practice English. So Jean Alesi lived with Eddie Jordan for about 1 year. He finished 10th in his first season but again won the championship at his second attempt. And whilst still participating in F3000 in 1989 he also got his break with Tyrrell at the French GP which Eddie Jordan helped to set up.
Tyrrell 1989>1990 In Jean Alesi First race in F1 driving for the underpowered Tyrrell team, Jean managed to finish fourth having at one stage to be up to second. This was an amazing debut. And Tyrrell snatched him up for the next Season. Jean Alesi Managed to secure 8 points in his first season with only 8 races. In 1990 and the first race of the season at the US grand Prix in Phoenix, Jean had a great race. As the race paned out Jean Alesi found himself at the front of the field, and leading the Grand Prix. He must of had great Composure as when Ayrton Senna overtook him for the lead, two corners later and Jean dived up the inside and took the lead back. Jean eventually finished in Second place, but gained the respect of the crowd and the entire Pitlane. He also had another Second Place finish in Monaco, and again behind Senna. Everyone wanted him to sign a contract with them but it was Ferrari who snapped him up.
Ferrari 1991>1995
Theys were hard times for Jean who actually ended up signing for a dyeing team, they were on there way down and Jean was going down with them. He only picked up 21 points in his first season with Ferrari but the second and third years were even worse, only 18 and 16 points. 1994 was slightly better, Ferrari Started to get there act together He had 4 oppotunities to win a grand Prix but ever time he lead the race his Engine parted, in big ways. I cried every time. He did manage to get one pole position though, so that was good. 1995 again same story lots of blown engines, but did get a few second places, and then in Canada, he won a great Grand Prix that was exciting from start to finish.
Benetton 1996-1997
Well He went to the best team in 1996 but again turned out to be a bad move. Benetton themselves were on there way down. They didn't design a new car because they thought there old car was good enough. Then in 1997 they were just trying to play catch up. Although there were a few Fastest Laps and near wins just missed out on. And in 1997 Jean picked up only his second Pole position.
Sauber 1998-1999
With all the big named teams already gone Jean had no option but go with Sauber. And with a few Brilliant drives he picked up the odd point. And notibly he managed to qualify Second behind Giancarlo Fisichella in 1999.
Prost GP 2000-2001
Again having no room in other teams Jean found himself driving for Alain Prosts team. Maybe he wished he hadn't bothered as he never got payed for his services and he only picked up a few points.
Jordan 2001
Back with Eddie Jordan. The man who helped him move into F1 in the first place. This was only for the last few races as Jordans other driver Heinz-Harald Frantzen was sacked. Heinz-Harald Frantzen moved to Prost, so it was like a swap. This was to be Jean Alesi's Final year in F1 ( so far ) you never no. He managed to pick up a few points which was great considering that Jordan didn't have any points at the start of the season.
DTM2002 This year Jean Alesi Competed in the DTM series which is German touring Cars. He managed to pick up a win at Donnington Park in his third race and should of picked up two more if he didn't have to move over for his team mate later in the year.
Jean Alesi is also the test driver for McLaren.
To some up then. Jean Alesi had a great entrance to Formula One and its just a shame that he didn't get the championship he deserves. If he just went to the right team at the right time, he could have been up there with the greats. If you could win the championship with your heart then he would have been the clear winner every time.
Advantages: Very skilled Disadvantages: Getting old
...will show us the fast Jean Alesi. The oppertunity came when Jordan driver Frentzen was sacked for going too slow and I'm sorry I agree. His speed wasn't the same as 1999 when he was outstanding, but now it looks like he's pulling a caravan.
The move to Jordan will definately suit him and his driving skills, I think he will outspeed Jarno Truilli. He was having a better year with Prost but still not a good one and when the opertunity to drive for ... ...else at the back of the grid. Meanwhile Frentzen will move to Prost and try and help Prost get better, I'm sure they will both get better with Frentzen and Frentzen will be pushing hard to prove he's still a top driver.
Alesi F1 career started great on his first race with Tyrell he got as high as second and finished fourth. He futher impressed by leading the US grand prix in Pheonix ahead of Senna, he even repassed Senna when Senna passed him but ...

Advantages: Not an automaton, great car control, rain ability Disadvantages: Tends to make the wrong choices for his career
...privileged to watch him.
Jean burst upon the F1 scene way back in 1989, driving for Tyrrell, and finishing in a superb fourth place - from sixteenth on the grid. What really woke people up to his talent, though, was that extraordinary battle he had with Ayrton Senna's McLaren in Phoenix the next year. For thirty laps he held Senna off, and even when the McLaren driver did force his way past, Jean, in a breathtaking manoeuvre, retook Senna at the ... ...of heart ruling head, but Jean would not be Jean otherwise. As things turned out, of course, Alesi's signing coincided with the start of Ferrari's worst slump in years. 1991 started off reasonably, but descended into farce by season's end when Alain Prost, by far Ferrari's biggest asset, was sacked before the last GP - to be replaced by that well-known superdriver, Gianni Morbidelli - for (correctly) saying the car was dreadful.
1992, though, turned ...

Advantages: Experienced driver Disadvantages: Too experienced?
Jean Alesi is currently the most experienced driver that is still racing in Formula One.
He is known to be a very good driver in the rain, but recently Prost hasn't really anabled Alesi to put in any good drives.
He seems like a nice fellow, and I quite liked the Ferrari dou for severl years, which included GEhard Berger and Jean Alesi.
A very experienced driver, but is he coming to the end of his racing career? I think he still has some time ... ...nice to see Alesi right back up at the front.
If I'm correct, he's only won one race in his entire career, which was in canada. He should have won more, but still very good, and when he has a competitive car, he is regularly finding himself on the podium. ...

...opinion,there is nothing left for jean to prove. He has already shown what a good driver he is when he was at benetton. Now in a less competitive car,he finishes further down the grid in a car that is gradually improving. He is one of the most experienced drivers in formula one,and this can prove essential in certain situations, such as wet weather driving and overtaking situations. ...indelible prints, speaking of F1 Jean cannot come to mind to who, as me, I am to toss the bills with the emotion instead of with the statistics and the victories. Has Schumacher conquered certainly, more than Aliesas but are we sincere, what has Jean had in Ferrari? And has he/she had Micheal it sews? I look at Jean before each competition and every time is as if it was before her, typhus for him always and I always see it combat, obstinate, also ... ...machines of the mismases cars, Jean is one of the few ones that arrives still to the circuits in wasp, dress of Jeans and it presses the hands and he/she smiles to everything, unworried of fame, money, happened, remembering when, years behind, there was him of the other part of the net, to dream with to champions, victories and a lot of glory. Many won't agree, but for me champion also means passion, enormous errors, of those that make you get worse, ...

prost are very much a mid field team despite having an excellent driver in jeanalesi.u will find this team lingering in the middle of the grid in about 12th/13th place. realiability is a big problem for them this year as it has been in previous years and the speed of the cars is not up too scratch either.this car is generally uncompetitive and as a result the team picks up few points when it does manage to finish a race. their cars still need a lot of work but they are slowly improving.but only slowly ...

Poor old Giancarlo. He has been with poorly running teams since he came to the sport. First it was Minardi who took his skills. They nurtured him as he consistantly came last in the races. Then his talent was realised and Eddie Jordan rescued him and put him in the Jordan alongside Ralf Schumacher. This was not a marriage made in heaven as Ralf was guilty of Pushing poor Giancarlo off on a couple of occasions. Not the best thing to do to your team mate. Then, as Jordan was improving, he moved to Benetton to replace JeanAlesi just as Benetton were going down the pan. Can he revive the fortunes of the team? Not with Alex Wurz in the Number 2 seat!!! ...
Mika Salo was an able replacement for Michael Schumacher following the German?s horrific crash as Silverstone, as he picked up 10 points from six races to lend valuable support to Eddie Irvine?s title charge.
Salo began the 1999 season as a test driver for BAR Supertec but drove in three races as cover injured Ricardo Zonta. His stand-in performances for Ferrari persuaded Peter Sauber to pursue his signature and take the seat of veteran JeanAlesi for his seventh year of Formula One. Salo is often outqualified by Diniz and needs to regain the form of previous seasons. ...
