After looking at all the models available I decided that the 2.5 litre petrol model would prove the most cost efficient, even over the diesel 4.0 litre model.
After searching for the desired 2.5 litre model, which was lead to believe are fairly hard to come by I found one reasonable priced at £12500 for a clean, tidy, 1998 car.
At first I was pleased with the Jeep as it served its purpose without any question. with the rear seats down I was able to transport many items of furniture in the rear, eg chest of draws with ease. Also the roof rack came in very handy. With the rear seats up and the dog guard in place the boot gives ample room for a 12 stone dog!
However I do find the Jeep to be uncomfortable on mid to long distance drives and very noisey at high speeds. The standard equipment on the Jeep seems a little basic. Heating system and stereo leave something to be desired, whilest it does come with electic windows and mirrors.
The car is designed for a certain function which it certanly performs although lacking in any fun to drive and the extras that you would presume would be included in a car labelled "sports". It has good torque, as would be expected in a 4*4 and will always pull, if not at a gentle pace. If you are looking for a car to perform a certain fuction then the Jeep is not a bad choice, however if you want to take the kids to school in it then I would advise going for something with a little extra.
Advantages: A Lot of Car for Your Money Disadvantages: Nil

After driving my Cherokee 4.0Ltd for three years, the rising cost of petrol got the better of me and I traded in for a 2.5 TD Orvis. I went for the Orvis because of the leather.
I used to love the auto and I must admit to it spending the first two weeks kicking myself for "going diseasel" and having a manual change.
I'm now 4 months and 4,000 miles into ownership and my self kicking has turned into self acclaim as I look at the on board computer ...

Advantages: Good in rough country Disadvantages: Noisy and not as roomy as you'd expect
I bought a used Jeep Cherokee 18 months ago because I fell for its looks and ruggedness. I needed a vehicle that would get me to work each day and also transport me over rough farm tracks and wet fields. I am really pleased with its preformance in these two respects. In fairly deep snow it also performed better than I expected. I've found the repairs to be fairly expensive and more frequent than I've been used to but that's the lottery of buying ... ...lady driver I find the Jeep fairly easy to drive but the lower gears are hard to shift. It's easy to change from two wheel to four wheel drive and this is a boon in slippery fields. I find the Jeep great fun. My elderly and disabled mother-in-law can get in and out of the front seat quite easily but if you want a family car you might consider something less agricultural. ...
