I recently bought a bargain Cherokee Orvis from e-bay at a very realistic price, bearing in mind the number plate is worth £1,000 !!!

The Cherokee I bought was a 4.0 litre Orvis model imported from America 1n 1994, so yes, it is left hand drive and is auto (which I love). The previous owner wanted something even bigger (!) as he and his friends are regular surfers, they needed the board space.

It appears to be a real head turner and people do give way to you ALWAYS when driving it, the Orvis has the gold wheels to which people seem to like. It handles well, is very comfortable and is very easy and nice to drive with a lively engine. I do get a lot of looks if I am in the Jeep on my own as it is left hand drive, but I do not have any problems with overtaking and parking etc, the Jeep in high enough to see over most things and spends most of its time either in built up areas or on motorways, so being a lefty is no problem ;-)

I have been advised to leave mine in 4 wheel drive permanently, mainly because it will do wheel spins in 2 wheel drive if you pull away quickly ! lol. My Orvis has electric seats (which are leather), remote central locking and some other nice additions which may not be on the UK models - when I start the car the doors will lock after about 30 seconds (if you leave the engine running on a cold day make sure you do not lock yourself out of the car !). Also, if I switch the engine off, THEN turn off the headlights, they will stay on for a couple of minutes to light my path to where I am walking too (nice one Jeep).

The only drawback with driving a sherman tank is the fuel consumption which is rather heavy especially if driven hard, although I am sure the diesel version provides much better economy. I have been looking at getting the Jeep converted to gas which is expensive but then costs much less to run, something I may consider in the new year.

To be honest, I would recommend these to anyone, compared to the estate car I also have, the Jeep runs rings around it for looks, being tough and being a head turner.

Friends and family live in remote areas to me and they have told me I will have no excuse not to call in winter now ! Too true, this is a VERY capable 4wd which can be in 2wd, full time 4wd or permanent 4wd.

It took me a little while to get used to driving it, especially as the centre of gravity on Jeeps is different to cars, sometimes on corners I thought I might tip it !!! But the wheelbase is quite long, so I am slowly gaining confidence with it.

If I could swap this for any other 4 wheel drive.... I would keep the Cherokee !

***Update*** I recently needed 4 new tyres for my baby which cost me £300 !!! Ouch ! I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will last me a while.

As far as everything else goes, it is great. A very reliable vehicle and very practical too. The only bug-bear I have is that the spare wheel is aganst the side window in the boot which does take up some of the boot space, however, it does mean that nobody will pinch the wheel !

Not needed any parts for it so far, but will update this op and let you know if anything does need replacing in the future.

Happy motoring ;-)

***UPDATE***

I have been driving a friends car for the last week (he is on hols and asked if I would use the car to prevent the battery from failing etc. Anyway, I got in my Jeep today, I turned the key and it fired ! 1st time after a week of being idle ! How's that for being reliable !!! I have had some cars in years gone by that have died in less than a week ! Needless to say the 4 litre engine was rearing to go ! So I gave my lil Tonka Jeep a good run today - the battery level meter was on half, which is fine - perfectly normal. I thoroughly enjoyed giving me Jeep a good run, and was really pleased to be back in a left-hand-drive car, not that all Jeeps are LHD, but mine is (it was imported in 1994) and I love it - everything is on the correct side for me ! and I find LHD cars easier to drive - but maybe that is just me ;-) Happy motoring Ciaosters ;-)
