I have owned my Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 for seven years and its the most reliable car I have ever owned. I had a Jaguar XJ6 before that, lovely car but cost a fortune in repairs and spares.

The Grand Cherokee feels well made and sturdy, it feels more like a car than a 4X4 to drive, no rolling around and plenty of power. Its very refined, at 11 years old it still runs quietly and smoothly (the engine sound is a lovely V8 burble).

This is a highly practical car, luxurious leather seats, heated and electrically adjustable, memory seats are great - no sitting for hours fiddling around when changing drivers, fully automatic climate control and aircon, but when its time to become a workhorse, the back seats go down and whether its junk for the tip or bicycles in the back for a ride, the transformation is instant. The built in roof rack is useful for those awkward loads like fence panels.

Fuel consumption is not as bad as you might think for a car like this, the engine seldom needs to rev higher than about 2000rpm and that gives MPG in the mid twenties, I have had several holidays from Surrey to Scotland and it always uses less fuel than expected.

The last winter is justification if any is needed for owning a 4X4 as good as this, without it I would not have been able to get off my estate as the road was a skating rink. If you are after a 4X4 you will not buy better than a Grand Cherokee in my view.
