When I moved in with my boyfriend at the beginning of June, I expected to get a job pretty easily, but after the terrible floods that hit Sheffield in the summer, I found myself jobless and ofter very bored. After completing every adventure game I own, I began searching for something on TV to get addicted to. I'm not really a big TV watcher, Big Brother makes me angry, Coronation street and Eastenders send me to sleep, Hollyoaks confuses me and after trying several programmes I flicked the telly off at the wall and went back to my trusty laptop.

One morning I was having my breakfast and I flicked the TV on to see if there was anything worth watching. I'd seen Jeremy Kyle a few times and liked it. Although, I was reasonably firmly set against chat shows like this, I think (having studied counselling) that quite ofter more harm is done than good. In fact, if I'm honest some get me quite angry, bringing those who are already vulnerable infront of a massive audience and either delving deep into their past or allowing them to have a full on slagging match with each other on television seems a little counter productive.

Jeremy Kyle changed my mind. The show seems more supportive than some other shows offers after support and care for families, as well as catching up with them in their own real life situations. Although there is still the old problem of seemingly bringing distressed people onto a stage and allowing them to shout at each other, which I admit makes great entertainment, but you have to question the emotional damage it is doing to them people.

So why do people go on the show? Well there are many very attractive reasons to go on the show; firstly that the show offer free DNA tests, lie detector tests, any sort of counselling or therapy, rehab, etc. Obviously people also have their own personal reasons, perhaps that they feel safe in the environment.

There is a wide range of topics discussed and although often stories border on the same subject and overlap slightly, they are normally different in their own way, and often they take you by suprise, some of the topics discussed are:
-Badly behaved kids/teenagers
-Quaralling Neighbours
-Cheating spouses
-Paternity of a child
-Addiction
-Death/Suicide/Murder

There are some truly touching stories, and a variety of people from different backgrounds, although the offer of free DNA tests/lie detector tests/aftercare tends to attract those with little money or no jobs. There are people of all ages and relationships of all natures and lengths; from weeks to decades.

There are also shows that discuss big topics such as Gangs, these are more rare and look at single cases from different perspectives. For example, in the example above; gangs, the points of view discussed were:
-Member of a gang,
-Mother of a gang member who was killed
-Ex gang member
-Mother of a boy killed by a gang
-Man attacked by a gang.
These points of view are all discussed in order to get a bigger picture of a topic. This is a really effective way of teaching the different points of view, as the guests seem to learn from each other and can also be supportive for each other.

Teenage Boot Camp is also a part of the Jeremy Kyle show, teenagers and their parents are sent on bootcamp with Graham (the show psycotherapist) and a team from the show. The teenagers and parents are chosen on the shows, but have to agree that they want to build a better relationship with each other before they are sent on boot camp.

Unlike in other shows often the audience don't participate in the Jeremy Kyle show. It is more common for the audience to participate in themed shows such as a gang theme.

Jeremy Kyle is an interesting host and is normally empathetic towards the guests, often relating back to his own life. Although sometimes I do find myself saying "don't say that!" at the TV as occassionally comments are counter productive, and just seem to make guests angry or upset, although as he says himself nobody is perfect and you can normally understand why he does make these comments.

I can't deny that although it is clearly wrong to take pleasure in other peoples problems, Jeremy Kyle is an entertaining program, especially when a nasty guest gets what they deserve. Jeremy comes out with some brilliant lines and is always quick to get his point across.

Normally a show consists of 3 stories, 2 that are discussed in great detail and 1 that is discussed quickly. I think this is one of the shows weaknesses because often the third story seems either pointless or very quickly looked over and normally nothing seems to get resolved on the program. It would probably be better if the first 2 stories were given the extra time.

It's currently on ITV from 9.30 - 10.30 on a weekday morning and there are also extra episodes on an afternoon on ITV2, if you miss them you can also catch them on ITV2+1.

Thanks for reading.
