The Shopping Experience –
My local Jessops store had 4 of the Canon A40’s in stock and on a busy final Saturday before Christmas the service was prompt even though there were around 7-8 people in the small store. As a last minute idea for a Christmas present for my good lady, I decided to get her a Digital Camera. She has been wanting one for ages ever since using one at work and bringing home the pictures to show off and exclaim constantly how much we should have one, how much we need one and how ‘crap’ our 35mm camera is in comparison.
The Homework – Well I thought about it and as I am starting to get the hang of Ciao I thought this should be my first port of call. I found some very helpful reviews on the range of digital cameras that I had in mind and so had a base to work from when I started looking for prices.

Jessops were competitive on price (£229.00) with other high street retailers. I also checked out a couple of Web sites and found that Dixons (£208.00) and Currys (£199.00) were offering cheaper prices for online purchases. I also tried Amazon and they came in at £199.00 too. I printed out the Amazon product description and price to take with me to Jessops as none of the Web sites could guarantee delivery prior to Christmas.
The Shopping Experience – My local Jessops store had 4 of the Canon A40’s in stock and on a busy final Saturday before Christmas the service was prompt even though there were around 7-8 people in the small store. I asked the assistant if I could take a look at the Canon and he got me a complete boxed version from the storeroom. He talked me through the features and what came in the package. He answered all of the questions I had and was able to give me prices very quickly and accurately on upgrades to memory cards etc.
Now if there is one thing that comes hard to some of us is haggling. I am a great believer in the fact that ‘If you don’t ask, you don’t get’. Just before paying I asked if they had a price match promise, to which the sales assistant replied ‘Yes’. ‘Does this apply to online stores too?’ He thought it did and I presented him with the printout from Amazon. He would have to check it with his head office and informed me that I might have to wait up to 10 minutes. Wait 10 minutes – potential saving £30. Decision made.
The sales assistant was gone all of 2 minutes and on returning confirmed that they would match the Amazon price. A result!
So I promptly proceeded to spend the £30 saving on an additional 64Mb memory card.
Verdict – I was very impressed with the service I received and I must inform you that if there is one thing that bugs me, it is poor service. I just don’t think that there is any excuse. In this country it is my opinion that we do not excerpt enough ‘buyer power’ on industry. If you don’t like something, don’t buy it. If you get hassle from a store, tell them. This gives them the chance to improve but if they ignore you, go elsewhere.
I would definitely consider Jessops when making a similar purchase again. The service was professional, knowledgeable and courteous. But I think the point that impresses most is that they were willing to bargain to get the sale and at a time of the year when things don’t stay on the shelves too long.
Advantages: Quality snaps, Reasonable pricing, Good service Disadvantages: Digital service not open to all.
...this year when I used Jessops for the first time.
Jessops were formed in the 1930's on a small scale and back then were very much a specialist company with few customers but have grown gradually through the decades. Today they have over 200 shops nationwide one of the largest companies of it's kind, are continuing to grow and are beginning to corner the niche in the photographic high street industry. Jessops has been voted best photographic retailer ... ...countless hourdes of others and Jessops are well aware of this. In the past my pictures have been poorly developed or have been poor quality countless times but the three times I have used Jessops now, my pictures have been top quality. As an amateur photographer that is all I am looking for really - consistently good quality snaps time after time and Jessops in my experience are the only service out there up to the job. They process the standard ...

Advantages: Five different sizes for each photograph Disadvantages: Can't think of any
...The great benefit of the Jessops CD is that all the files are the JPG format, ensuring that the vast majority of programs can access and work with the files. But having the files in five different sizes, greatly reduces the need for changing them anyway. I've never been too pleased with the APS format, because the smaller prints always seem such a waste when you could use the panoramic setting, whereas the panoramic setting never really seemed suitable ... ...you can upgrade the free Jessops film to a Kodak, or whatever other brand you require for a small fee - you just pay the retail difference between Jessops and your favoured brand. Its so good not to have to scan all the photos in myself, I wish I'd discovered the service a couple of years ago. Highly recommended service in my view. Incidentally, if you want to look at my photos of Madrid and Toledo you'll be able to see them www.themos.org/madrid ...

...Doncaster and Sheffield branches of Jessops but should be attributable to any branch with in-store developing kiosks.
My experience of the in-store developing from digital media is very good. The Jessops branches that I use have a bank of touch screen machines (kiosks) for you to develop your digital pictures. Each store has several such machines so you never have long to wait (if at all) to use one.
The machines take a wide variety of memory cards ... ...you are a member of Jessops Picture House online store you can also upload the pictures from the machine to your account. The prints that I have had done there have been exceptionally good quality with vibrant colours and on good quality paper. The first time I got pictures developed through those machines were about 4 to 5 years ago and the colours on those prints have lasted without fading. I have been extremely pleased with all of the photos developed ...

...from my local branch of Jessops and although they didn't have it in stock at the branch, they very quickly were able to check their system, confirming that one was available indeed available from their warehouse. I paid for the item in full upon ordering and it was in the store for collection within two days whereupon they very promptly telephoned me to let me know - All at a price LOWER than ANY of their competitors.
In my experience - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Advantages: cheap Disadvantages: You can't go back and take those photographs again
...I used to work in Jessops (post graduating, loans up to my elbows and those necessary bills to pay, then your dignity has to tumble), and although I have fond memories of my time there, I plead with you to think twice before you pop into your local store to get your films developed.

Advantages: Good contrast , Flexible Disadvantages:
Being a budget photographer, I am always looking for the best for least. In Jessops Black & White photographic paper I have found what I think is the very best for the price. It is in direct competition to Ilfords own muiltigrade paper system. The same rules for grading apply to both brands with Jessops being at least two pounds cheaper for each size. I tend to use the gloss finish that I prefer. The paper is very tolerant for developing and gives an excellent range of contrasts. I t comes in a wide range of paper and pack sizes. ...
Advantages: It's free when you process a film Disadvantages: Colours are muted and prints grainy (for this speed of film)
Most people will have first come into contact with a Jessops film because they have just dropped a film in (of any brand) at Jessops for print processing. Jessops give you a 200 ISO/ASA print film back for each film you process FOR FREE !
Sounds like a bargain. In fact Jessops even have £2.99 emblazoned on a corner of the box !
Jessops don't manufacture film, this means that it comes from one of the other film manufacturers and is rebranded in the canister and box. Jessops will and almost certainly have changed supplier over the 15 years that I have used their films. This does still sounds like a bargain - free and a known film brand !
For many photographers (and by that I mean people who takes photos - mums & dads, kids, tourists) Jessops film is a good product. If you like Jessops printing as well it's the cheapest way to keep ...
Advantages: Cheap and the quality is great Disadvantages: none
As a student you have a tight budget and doing a photography degree certainly leaves you strapped for cash! After looking around I realised that Jessops was the cheapest in town for paper so I tried it, expecting it to be low quality but I found it as good as the likes of Ilford paper but that bit cheaper. There's certainly not much difference at all.
I don't worry about buying the more expensive paper for my uni projects anymore as this Jessops paper does great - you don't lose any contrast or tones, and it has a nice finish when it's dried. I'm onto my 11th box now I think - so it must be good! I hope you find that it good too. The best reults do come from using Jessops printing solutions with it, but it's still excellent either way. ...
