Jigsaw puzzles used to be boring. The pictures were limited to little houses in the country, or seascapes, although over the years, what happened is that companies found that the idea of slotting little pieces of cardboard together with popular. What was not popular was the small range of pictures on the jigsaws, which was something that was easy to put right. I have been doing jigsaws for years, not as much as my mother in law or mother, though in order to capture the imagination of people like me that want something more of a challenge than a simple puzzle, the range that is available now is ... more

Advantages Advantages The right puzzle is so much fun to complete

Disadvantages Disadvantages The wrong puzzle leads to boredom or frustration

Of all the presents that get given to my children by well-meaning relatives, the ones that cause the most frustration are puzzles. This is a shame really, because with a little thought puzzles can be a fun and educational way to spend a rainy afternoon. When buying a puzzle for your child you need to take a couple of things into consideration, their age and ability. That 2000 piece puzzle may look amazing, but if your child can't put it together it's going to be a big waste of money. So how do you go about choosing the right puzzle for your child? Well having for children aged between 6 and 13 ... more

***Note*** This opinion, while containing info about how jigsaw puzzles can be great for children, is also about how adults can enjoy jigsaws, and indeed, enjoy doing them with their children as a family activity. When something is broken into hundreds of pieces, it’s very satisfying to slowly and painstakingly put it back together, bit by bit. It takes endless patience, some skill and a lot of determination. I suppose that’s why I love jigsaw puzzles so much. Doing jigsaws is a hobby I’ve brought with me from my childhood. It’s something my mum always used to love, and ... more

Advantages Advantages Great fun to do, educational, improves hand eye co ordination

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can get frustrating, patience is needed

Jigsaw puzzles for children? Surely jigsaw puzzles are great for ‘children’ of all ages from 2 to 92!! I know that I don’t really need to say this but a jigsaw is basically a picture which has been cut up into pieces and the idea is to reassemble it using the photograph of the original picture on the lid of the box as a guide. I’m sure we all remember the thick wooden jigsaws from our early childhood – maybe only ten pieces at most but they were great fun to do and started, in some of us, a lifelong passion for jigsaws. They help to teach children hand to eye co ... more
