I've got a new best friend, his name's Jim and he's everything I've ever wanted in a man. He's unbelievably rich, has the ability to soothe my brow when I'm feeling rough and is decidedly mellow and laid back. I've enjoyed Jim in the garden, relaxed in a hot bath with him and I even took him to bed last night and reached out for more as soon as I was finished! Jim's perfect.

I've known about Jim for a long time, my dad regularly had the pleasure of Jims company at Christmas but was introduced properly on Saturday. The bloke over the road came over while I was in the middle of dying with flu and when he saw how ill I looked he said he'd got the perfect thing. He went back to his house and came back 5 minutes later with Jim...

You see Jim isn't a man; come on girls, what man could be as perfect as I've just described? Jim Beam is a bourbon whiskey all the way from Kentucky. Founded in 1795, Jim Beam has been under the watchful eye of six generations of the Beam family and a genuine bottle will never come without a signature of James B Beam on the front of the bottle. The bottle itself is square with a very minimalist label containing a brief history of the Jim Beam empire and six small photographs of the founding family.

Twisting the cap off it smells just like liqueur chocolates, mellow and slightly bitter with a definite aroma of aniseed. It smells good enough to... well... drink! So I do. I pour myself a tumbler and drink the first glass neat over ice. The first thing that surprises me is that it doesn't cause the roof of my mouth to explode with the pain of neat whiskey. My ALL TIME favourite spirit is Jack Daniels but I find with JD you need to have at least the first two glasses with a mixer until your mouth can get used to the flavour otherwise it just burns. But not good old Jim. The flavour of this bourbon is so smooth that the flavour is actually impaired rather than complimented by the addition of a mixer. It has a full, rich flavour but (thankfully) lacks the nasty burn that the majority of whiskeys have. However, it is strong enough to bring tears to your eyes when you drink anything more than a sip at a time and as with other whiskey, if you gulp it down you'll be sorry when you get that awful 'watery' sensation in your mouth that just screams 'whiskey coming up' at you... I drank subsequent glasses of Jim Beam with lemonade and this seemed to dilute the richness of the flavour so I went back to drinking it over ice.

Jim Beam isn't harsh in the slightest, it goes down smoothly and gives that delicious warming feeling down your throat as you swallow. You can feel the warmth in your stomach and from the first glass onwards this drink will go to your head. I can hold my drink well (in my opinion) but Jim Beam manages to be such a lovely tasting bourbon that it's easy to drink too much and catch the falling over disease that seems to afflict people when they've drunk too much alcohol. A plus point though is hangovers seem to be non-existent with Jim Beam, compared to the raging headaches Bells and Jack Daniels produce this is an excellent initiative to switch allegiance to Jim.

The sight of Jim Beam is a wonderful experience. The drink is a gorgeous golden amber colour, much richer looking than Bells whiskey and a fair bit darker. When poured over ice it's therapeutic watching the amber liquid splash onto the ice cubes and slide into the bottom of the glass. Gorgeous.

In Asda, a 70cl bottle of Jim Beam will cost you £11.47 although this is a roll back price so expect to pay around £12.99 in other supermarkets and off licences. At 40% vol. Jim Beam is in line with the strength of other brands of whiskey and bourbon although the mellowness of the flavour makes it seem less strong than other whiskeys.

Thanks for reading.
