Plectrums come in many shapes and sizes and there is no real rights and wrongs as to which one you use, it is down to personal preference. You don't need to have one to play guitar but using one is a dam sight easier on your fingertips. I use several different types of plectrum normally which ever one is closest to me when I pick up my guitar. However when it comes down to my own choice I use a 0.60mm one for guitar and 0.80 for bass, why because the extra rigidity on the 0.80mm ones is better for plucking the thicker strings on the bass.
Moving onto the Jim Dunlop NYLON Plectrums they have a couple of noticeable differences from the other plectrums I use some good and some bad........
Firstly they are made from NYLON which is a fairly rigid material in this form but has quite a high degree of flexibility, essential for the application. Another handy thing is that NYLON's mechanical properties are enhanced when it absorbs moisture; kind of handy when you are sweating a lot, though this almost certainly makes no difference. It also is chemically resistant to oils, which is handy considering the amount of oil a sweaty guitarist makes. But to be honest all of these things make no difference whatsoever to the playing properties of the plectrum. What I do notice with these ones is that after a playing for while the rigidity of the plectrum does deteriorate as it gets warmer, a slight minus in my book.
The other noticeable difference is that Jim Dunlop NYLON plectrums have a embossed part where you hold it. The idea behind this is that it is easier to grip and less likely to be dropped whilst playing. A great Idea but not always true in practice the only way to ensure you don't drop your plectrum whilst playing is to gaffa tape it to your fingers, and even this is not a fully effective solution. I also notice that after a while playing these the embossed part starts to rub between my fingers, me personally I prefer a flat pick with no fancy embossing.
There is no clear positive difference between these and most plectrums on the market. price wise they are identical to all other plectrums at 3 for a pound. Most decent music shops will chuck in a couple for free when you are buying a guitar as well. So if you are starting out buy a half dozen and see what suits you.
Advantages: Unbreakable Disadvantages: None at all
...in praise of and recommending Jim Dunlop nylon plectrums.
If you are new to playing guitar you may have found that plectrums are one option for striking the strings. You can use your fingers to pluck and strum, and you can even get little finger-picks to go on the ends of your fingers if you are really keen to get a louder and brighter picking sound.
It's mainly the rhythm and lead guitarist who will benefit from the use of a plectrum. Classical ... ...don't win out over the Jim Dunlop, nylon plectrum with its battleship grey and rather staid appearance. They certainly do. A child wouldn't choose a Jim Dunlop nylon plectrum over a lime green plastic one with a more interesting shape. So why should you?
You should go for nylon because it is the best material. It doesn't break. You might lose it but unless you go to extraordinary lengths to deliberately stress test one with a view to proving me ...

They also have a sort of cerated grip on them just to give that extra hold and comfort, this can bbe very usefull when on stage and getting a little nervous, because as strange as it sounds you sweat, and the grip gives you that little exrta hold you need so you ...
