know from the history books. This country is overrun with wolves that roam the forests, providing the perfect setting for a witty and dramatic story spanning the whole country, from the frozen North to the city of London, and peopled with all manner of evil governesses and ancient aunts. Filled with brilliantly-drawn Dickensian characters, it would make an excellent choice for strong preteen readers who like an old-fashioned story with a strong plot and good characterisation. This book often appears on lists of best-loved children's books. (Ages 10 to 12) EN
Advantages: Great exciting strory Disadvantages: (supposed to be for kids, and i like it)
...I loved this book and read it recently, as i loved the film when I was younger.
It's about cousins Sylvia and Bonnie and their adventures with horrid miss slighcarp and the wolves around the giant house they live in.
Really worth reading if you like adventure and suspense. At point in the story you can't read the book quick enougth so that you find out what happens next.
The characters are all very unique and interesting and make you want to read more about them. The story and the people in it has a sense of mystery about it and intrigue making you want to read on.
I'd reccomend the book for 12 to 15 year olds or maybe for those a bit younger or older as the story is fun and enjoyable.
I love the way which JoanAiken describes the big house which the two girls live in and it reminded me of the huge house described...

Advantages: Exciting, good historical background, well-written, main character very believable Disadvantages: Some unlikely coincidences, could seem old-fashioned to modern teens, a few rather gruesome descriptions
...JoanAiken is probably best known for her children's book 'The Wolves of Willoughby Chase'. She has also written several other books for older children, as well as some rather chilling ones for adults. I personally much prefer her children's books, and recently read 'Go Saddle the Sea' to my teenage sons.
