At the time when I bought the Colour Glaze, it was a new addition to the John Frieda range, I happened to be using the Brilliant Brunetteshampoo and conditioner and I'd recently spent enough at Boots for them to give me a £2 off professional haircare voucher at the till.
I'd never coloured my hair before and when I bought this it was described along the lines of being a colour "enhancer" rather than an actual dye. As one would gather from the fact that I'm reviewing a product for brunettes with "Chocolate to Espresso" toned hair, mine is pretty dark brown so I wasn't looking to colour it, just to make it look nicer.
Consulting now with John Frieda's website for purposes of accuracy, the company describe it as a "gel-creme formula" and although it informs me that the product is not a permanent hair colour and "will not lift or lighten colour", it also claims that you can use this for "subtly blending away grey". Being in my twenties, grey hair isn't yet an issue for me.
As directed, I washed, conditioned and then applied the glaze - the "gel-creme" formula might conjure up images of a golden syrup or buttercream consistency, but actually this is slightly runnier and thinner than, say, that squeezy chocolate sauce you put on ice cream - without being watery or sticky. So it's easy enough to comb through your still-wet hair - the opening of the bottle is quite tiny so it does actually feel like applying ice cream sauce to your hair.
The only thing is, as with most "dye" type products, it does mark your hands (and forehead in my case - some dripped down slightly when I applied it). Perhaps this doesn't happen with the red or blonde varieties of the Colour Glaze - anyhow, fortunately it will (just about) wash off while you're rinsing your hair.
The result was pleasing - my hair felt shiny and smooth (moisturised would be too much of an exaggeration) and my mum actually commented that my hair seemed in good condition - but I'm not sure the product was worth the £6.50 I think I paid for 190ml (well, £4.50 after the discount) two years ago. The bottle lasted over a month but I've seen cheaper intensive conditioners that do a better job - plus the stains on my hands were a bit annoying. (Really, I feel the directions should advise you to wear gloves if the product is likely to leave marks and this product didn't.)
I am in two minds about whether I'd recommend it - I suppose I would, but I'd warn the person I told to buy some plastic gloves to wear when using it.
