I have had an account card with John Lewis for a few years now. Whilst I have long since cut up any other store cards I had, the John Lewis one gets continual use. In fact at this time of year it gets a hammering.
The reason for getting one in the first place was that JL didn't accept credit or debit cards at their stores. This has now changed for Waitrose but I still use my JL card there anyway.
The economics bit: The JL Option account charges 1.02% per month (13% APR) to current users, although if you take out a new one the rate for the first 6 months is 0.51%/month. You recieve a statement every month and you can pay by cheque, in store or by post or you can pay online with a debit card. For accounts paid in full by direct debit each month you can have up to 31 days interest free. The minimum payment each month is 5% of the outstanding balance to a minimum of £5
Benefits to card holders: Free copy of Waitrose Food magazine each month. Orders from John Lewis shops are delivered free (within a 30 mile radius of shop) Orders over £50 from Waitrose can be delivered free (but not when ordered online) Invitations to special store events, such as wine tasings fashion shows etc. Invitations to concerts, picnics and other leisure events, often at discounted prices or even free. A good summer night out could be an open air concert with a picnic packed by waitrose for about £50.
Online You can manage your account online. The system allows you to: Apply for an account See all terms and conditions see an up to date balance pay into your account Request an increase in your credit limit request further cards on your account for family members Update your personal details.
Since this is a storecard I am talking about, and chances are unless one is very disciplined and doesn't run up an unnessary debt a storecard or credit card can only be recommended as being reltively good value, efficient and easy to use. I'm not about to say " get yours today" but if you like John Lewis ( remember they are "never knowingly undersold") or you make use of Waitrose online I think it may be a card to add to your pack. I can say that I have found nothing negative about the card. Happy shopping!

This was another store card I added to the pack while at uni and since then it gets regular use in both Waitrose and John Lewis. Although I completely agree about settling the balance monthly- I couldn't sleep at night if I didn't! Harvey

I think you've explained this well, with the pros and cons. I don't like store cards at all and try to keep my general 'pack of cards' to a bare minimum. This sounds like it has some good benefits. Sue

Good op but I avoid store cards like the plague. It would be useful to know the finance company behind the card. Is it someone like GE (spit!) Capital for instance? :) xx E.
