I will only rate one review, per person, per day. It's only fair and allows me to share the love!
The 2003 film, Johnny English, is a comedy film parodying the James Bond films, with an incompetent spy trying to protect the UK from evil threats. The story continued with a sequel released in 2011, called Johnny English Returns.Johnny English Returns is set five years after the first film, with Johnny English learning martial arts in Tibet after he botched a mission in Mozambique and was stripped of his knighthood. However, English is requested to return back home to London, by MI7, to assist with a mission. The new boss of MI7, "Pegasus" assigns English to stop a plot to assassinate the Chinese Premier during scheduled talks with the Prime Minister. English received assistance from junior agent, Colin Tucker as they discover a secret group of three assassins, known as "Vortex" who sabotaged English's mission in Mozambique and are involved in the plot to kill the Chinese Premier. MI7's behavioural psychologist, Kate Sumner, attempts to help English remember the mission in Mozambique to discover more about the mysterious "Vortex". English proves yet again that he is far from the perfect spy as he bumbles from one disaster to another.
I thought that this was a fun and enjoyable film. It is far from a challenging film that will not not exercise your brain. It features a goofy script that spoofs the spy genre. At times the story is a bit predictable and a bit cheesy, with the jokes, but thankfully this does not spoil the fun in the film. It is similar to the first film in that it is mainly about English bumbling from one mishap to another and somehow managing to come out on top. This film has plenty of laughs and funny characters, although they are a bit over exaggerated at times. It is definitely a character driven film, with some exciting action scenes thrown in for good measure. There are some special effects in the film which are good and help add to the excitement of the story. It is a fun journey to watch English try his best to save the day and fail miserably.Rowan Atkinson is funny as the , a clumsy yet kind-hearted MI7 Agent, Johnny English, who must stop the assassination of the Chinese Premier. Atkinson is great at physical comedy and proves that with his great performance in this film. I thought that Rosamund Pike is good as Kate Sumner, MI7's behavioural psychologist and English's love interest. I think one of the reasons Pike was picked to star in this film is her association with the James Bond film, Die Another Day, in which she starred. Despite that link to spy films, Pike is a good as Sumner and good eye candy in this film. Daniel Kaluuya is decent as Agent Colin Ticker, the sidekick for English. Dominic West does well as Simon Ambrose, a fellow MI7 Agent who plays the antagonist of the film. This film also features Gillian Anderson, Tim McInnerny, Mark Ivanir, Richard Schiff and Pik-Sen Lim
Oliver Parker has directed an enjoyable comedy film that provides lots of laughs and funny characters. This film may not be a great film, but it is funny and enjoyable none the less.
