...that offered by S G Johnson offers on their website
- Keep waste bins tightly covered.
- Mop up spilled liquids and food promptly
- Keep food covered when not in use. ( I bought some of those twee little collapsible netted domes!)

...lobby today, companies like SC Johnson would have produced one. Moreover companies, like Ecover, which pride themselves on safer eco cleaning products, don’t seem to produce any insect killing preparations.

Therefore, until we find a better alternative we are stuck with insecticides and of these, Raid is probably the most effective available for domestic use that I have discovered during my “ killing years” However it should be used ... more

SUPER FLY GUYS

Advantages: Good price and effective
Disadvantages: Smells awful, needs to be used with caution

DISCLAIMER! No wine or hair products in this one! It seems that this Summer my kitchen was the ‘place to be’ for the local fly population for some reason. I always get a handful of them in there, no doubt attracted by the two bowls of cat food, litter tray and yesterday’s washing-up in the sink but this year there was a hideous invasion! I’m talking horror movie stuff here – too many to count, lurking in every corner, following me around my kitchen ...
...Apart from the fact that they are annoying and dirty, there is also the possibility of maggots appearing on any stray bits of cat food that I miss on the occasions I bend down as far as the kitchen floor – yeugh! So, for prevention and cure, I have always had one of those solid Vapona fly killers placed in the kitchen quietly gassing them and it always did the trick. Ah! This year after trawling all the relevant shops and websites, I came to the ...

A BUG'S LIFE NO MORE

Advantages: QUICK, EFFECTIVE, LONG-LASTING
Disadvantages: STRONG SMELL,

...Made by the infamous Johnson Wax Ltd, makers of Mr Sheen and other household products, Raid has been my lifesaver. Using this product couldn’t be easier, simply aim, target and fire. A couple of quick short sprays are enough to get the little blighters running for cover and within a few minutes each pest starts dive-bombing onto the windowsill and starts doing an impressive round of back-spins before dying. So pretty effective in my book. Raid’s ...
...make up this formula, hence the lack of floral aroma. Great news if like me dreary eyed in the morning you reach for the polish by mistake. This product is only intended for indoor use. Gees, you’d be spraying outdoors all day long if it was intended for the garden. I must point out that the chemicals are harmful for pets and young children. I only spray when my kids are out of the room and only allow them to come in after 10 minutes to allow the ...

Buzz Off

Advantages: knocks them dead in seconds, lots of safety intructions
Disadvantages: a lot of safety instructions to remember!

...other flying insects and SC Johnson is a trusted long-established brand name that everyone can recognise. Conditions of Use Please read these instructions before using. This is a powerful insecticide and care should be taken to read the guidelines and instructions before use. The control of substances hazardous to health regulations (COSSH) 1988 may apply if you are using this product at work. Spray it in short bursts only into the air. 1 second ...
...I find that two short bursts usually does it if you are close enough to the little beast. Don't breath the mist in and cover all food and food preparation surfaces, equipment and utensils before you use it. Cover any fish tanks and bowls before you spray, as it is harmful to fish. Raid is approved under the Control of Pesticides Regulations1986 for use as stated on the can. Also on the can it says if you want to clear the room completely of flies ...

Attack of the killer flies!!!!!!

Advantages: Works almost instantaneously
Disadvantages: Not so good for those with pets

One summer I had a much-needed use for an insect killer, and this is how the (rather gross) story goes. I had moved into my first house but had no previous domestication and decided to attempt making a roast chicken-it wasn’t to bad, but it got worse-as the bin was full I simply put in a carrier bag a threw it next to bin-wish I had the power of hindsight now! Weeks later I noticed that flies appearing everywhere and pupating fly chrysalis everywhere ...
...behind the bin supporting a family of maggots-GROSS! So how am I going to get rid of those awful flies that had emerged from my rather bad cooking experience (and lack of home domestication!)? I tried hitting them with a newspaper but I wasn’t quick enough so down the shops to get some insect killer… APPERANCE The product is a blue spray can with a picture of a fly appearing to die on it-fantastic I thought because that’s what I wanted them all ...

A BLUE DALEK...

Advantages: Very effective against most flying insects, very rapid 'knock down' action.
Disadvantages: Takes time to act against my fave pest-wasps. Some Bluebottles have appeared to have become resistant...USE WITH CAUTION!

I purchased a can of this household spray about two years ago as I had run out of a previous can of an alternative Coopers product, which I'd had for years..can hardly remember anything apart from the fact it took ages to work. So the Blue can caught my attention one night in Asda. A quick glance over it was sufficient-it claimed to kill two of the four creatures I hate above all others-flies and wasps (the others are fleas and rodents..). Off to ...
...bit of reading, I discovered the product was CFC free ie Ozone friendly , a good thing. But the propellant contained Butane-as in lighter gas so highly flammabe. And the active ingredients were tetramethrin 0.32% and another substance called d-phenothrin 0.07% w/w. For the chemists amogst us the molecular formula is available on the latter substance by putting the name into Google. I still remember my A-Level Chemistry and the formulation goes on ...
