What they are:
************
Pliable linen softwaves™ fabric wipes impregnated (boom boom! :) with a special blend of Johnson's baby lotion to wipes your baby’s bot clean of all the nasties that are revealed once the nappy has been peeled away. By cleansing and cleaning thoroughly you help prevent inflammation of the nappy area and cut down on nappy rash outbreaks.

We started using Johnson’s babywipes after we got their free sampler pack with our New baby NHS kit. This is a free kit that every new Mother receives once she has delivered her baby in an NHS hospital. It contains a lot of “advice leaflets”, money-off vouchers (yay!) and best of all free baby-related product samples (triple yay!)

Among those free samples were 3 travel packs of baby wipes from 3 different manufacturers (normally retail for about £1.30)

How to establish if they are for you:
*****************************
As an experiment we tried each sample packet for a week and then used cotton buds and water for the following week having being warned that certain babies did not take to wipes as it has a rash-effect on their skin.

It was not realistic for us to use cotton and water to wipe our son all the time as the nursery and changing mat live upstairs. It would have not been practical to carry a new born baby (remembering to support the head!) as well as a container of tepid water up our narrow steps every time we needed a nappy change.

So how did we get on? The first packet resulted in a rash within a few hours of starting to use them and were consigned to my bathroom shelf as make-up removers. (Where they still sit unused to this day!) The second packet smelled so highly perfumed, well they had a whiff off them of something generally not found anywhere in nature, they went straight in the bin. This says a lot about how bad they were as I am a lifetime member of the ‘oooh I’ll find a use for it' hoarders club. The third packet was the pink diamond that are Johnson’s origional baby wipes.

“Ingredients”:
***********
The Wipes are alcohol free. I should think so too as the last thing you want to put near baby’s easily cracked new-born skin is something like alcohol which although antiseptic and cleansing can severely irritate delicate areas. We have searched for a cheaper alternative to Johnsons but were shocked to realise that 2 of the supermarket ‘own brands’ we looked at contained alcohol. The wipes are ph balanced so they are not to acidic or base to dry or irritate skin. Johnsons claim that they are as mild as pure water and can be used from top to toe on a baby. While we have found this to be true, I would still recommend that parents do a patch test first to ensure that their child does not take against the ingredients of the wipes. Although the wipes work like soap they do not contain lanolin which can also irritate and tighten skin (think how the skin on your adult face feels when you wash it with soap)

So what else are they good for:
************************
Snot removal (all the parents reading this will nod and all the non-babied up ones will go “bleughhhhh” ;)
Make-up removal (or so I have been told by my girlfriend’s still about town)
Cleaning off the orange stuff that collects at the edge of my sons mouth after every pre-made baby meal containing carrot.
Wiping spilt formula/wine off the carrot.
Taking on a plane to use as bog-roll. Way better to have moisturised wipe for your bot in a pressurised cabin on a long distance flight than the chip paper passengers are generally offered.

What they do not do:
********************
Stop your baby from sticking his hand into the contents of his newly peeled back nappy and taking a delighted handful of the stuff there (I can hear another choras of nods and bleughhhs here)
They will not prevent nappy rash only changing a nappy frequently and regular bath times will do this (with a little help from Johnson’s baby wipes)

Availability:
**********
Nationwide and internationally in supermarkets and chemists.

“Flavours”:
*********
Johnson's original Baby Skincare wipes (available in single, double and quad packs)
Johnson's Baby Extracare Wipes with Aloe and Willowherb. (available in single and double packs)

Disadvantages:
***********
They are an awful lot more expensive than cotton buds and water. The original does do come in multi-saver quad packs but we find that if we are late to the supermarket on a Saturday, they are all gone.
The sensitive ones only come in double packs so can be an expensive option.
They come in an awful lot of non-biodegradable plastic packing . More landfill fodder which as parents with the responsibly of handing the earth over to the next generation we have to consider, as well as how to speed up out nappy changing records.
The wipes themselves do biodegrade but very slowly so disposing of them by flushing is not to be advised.

Cost:
****
£1.39 for a travel (sample) pack. That is 24 wipes.
£3.37 for a double refill pack. That is 144 wipes.

NOTE:
Spots and Rashes in babies should always be checked by your GP if they appear any way abnormal, especially if they are accompanied by a fever.

Love Johnson's but not their wipes. They start off fine but get very wet half way down the packet and they continue to get more soggy. Pampers are my favourites.
