If you are reading this then you probably also have the dreaded problem of a hairy top lip!!! So you have looked at other methods of getting rid of this fine hair. Waxing, which is painful, or shaving which is not a very reliable method as the hair comes back stubbly and coarser, plus you need to do it very frequently. So you opt for bleaching.
Jolen is the only brand name I have heard of. I usually go for brands as I don't think some shop brands are up to scratch.
Now you've bought your pack of Jolen. It comes in a very plainly designed green and white package, which contains a spatula, a palette, a small vial of accelerator and a small jar of the creme bleach and the instructions.
Always, always do a patch test before each use as you could become allergic, or may well already be allergic to the hydrogen peroxide which the
product contains. It's quite simple to do. Just mix a little up, put it on your arm, leave for ten mins then rinse off with cold water. If there is no redness or itchiness after 24 hours, you can go ahead and use it straight away.
Now comes the fun part. The palette is rather small and so mixing can be quite awkward. You just mix a quarter spatula of accelerator to a half spatula of the creme bleach. I tend to mix a little more as the quantity is not enough. It is quite hard to mix as the powder does not readily dissolve into the creme. Be careful and try to mix as thoroughly as possible or you will get lumps of powder and these really sting!!!
Now you apply it to your face. This can be pretty messy, but not too difficult to do once you have mastered it through practise. The packet says to wait for 10 minutes then if this is not long enough, then reapply for 5 to 10 more mins. For me this is not long enough and I have to leave it on for a lot longer, but this will vary from individual to individual, depending upon skin and hair type, and how readily it absorbs the mixture.
Th en comes the wait. It is quite awkward to do anything else whilst having Jolen on your face (sounds kinky!!!). I personally lie down and watch tv till the time is up. If you get an itch, DON'T scratch it as it is hard to reapply and you may have to remove the whole lot and start again, and you'll have messy fingers. The mixture can dry up and flake off onto your clothes/furniture. Get it off immediately. It rubs in so easily and stains so very badly. Not a good idea on your £500 leather sofa. Also don't answer the door, it's pretty embarassing I can assure you if you forget you have it on your face!!! One major downside is the stench. This is very strong. If you are doing your top lip, obviously the vicinity of your sensitive eyes and nose can leave you feeling like you are in the middle of summer with the worst bout of hayfever ever. I've bawled my eyes out time and again. It's painful on the nostrils too. Don't let this put you off though, you won't notice it after the first 2 minutes. It isn't fun though.
After the time is up, you need to clean it off. I wipe it off with a tissue. It is very thick and sticky and I would never just wash it off as you can risk it going in your eyes. Seriously nasty. Always use a tissue and thoroughly wipe it off, then wash your face to get rid off the smell and any other traces of the stuff. It is quite hard to rinse off the spatula and palette and down the sink, due to the consistency. Use an old sponge and wipe it off everything with hot water. That usually works for me.
The results, you may be wondering, are very good. The hair is almost invisible, and is left very soft and smooth, and most importantly, bleached. Very much worth the effort. It lasts about 2 weeks and so if you think about it 10 minutes every two weeks isn't too bad. Much better than shaving, but obviously not as effective as waxing. Electrolysis for me is too expensive. I think Jolen is a very cheap m ethod of removing or disguising hair.
Jolen comes in two sizes. Small for £4.25 or large for £9.25. I buy the small and it lasts for a good few months. Very cheap indeed if you compare it to buying razor blades and shaving gels or facial waxing strips.
You can also use Jolen to bleach your eyebrows (this must really sting), and your arms and legs. Should you wish to bleach the arm or leg area, simply mix one part powder to two parts creme bleach. To save money reuse the mixture after you have finished one arm/leg. This saves on the awkward mixing process and also the efficacy of the product is not reduced by using it twice or even three times. But do not save it up for another time. That is just gross. This process can be very time consuming compared to a small area like a top lip.
I would definitely recommend Jolen. I cannot say I have tried other bleaching products, so I can't recommend it over others, but my own personal experience of Jolen is it is very good and very economical. However, it is quite a messy and slow process, but with practise you can really speed things up and have a beautifully bleached top lip in 15 mins!!!
