Joop! So good they named it with an exclamation mark. So great they made it appear almost arrogant in it's naming. A risk? Of course, this stuff is a cracking aftershave and fragrance.
Joop is the brain child of German fashionist Wolfgang Joop, so no need to question where he got the name from...Other than that, it's not very exciting - since 1997, Joop's products have been sold through Joop GmbH, which is clearly visible on the side of the packaging, and here is there main male product - "Homme."
The packaging is much of what you'd expect - quite non-descript yet alluring by making you want to know what it smells like, in a dark red/pink colour, shading to black the further you go up the packet. Inside the cardboard outer case is the clear glass bottle with the pinkish-red liquid. The dark crimson lid is easily pulled off to reveal a silver spray-nozel to release the fragrance.
Now, reviewing an aftershave has to be a tricky business. It's hardly something that goes by the book and is only a set of basic instructions, directions or ingredients. Instead it's down to opinion of smell. It's described by the manufacturers as an "oriental ambery fragrance," going on to say; "The burst of cool, fresh spiciness unfolds to reveal a warm floral body and a strong, sensual oriental character." Well, that'll do nicely then! On a personal front, I'd agree with the somewhat oriental smell, and if an aftershave can be 'spicy' then Joop Homme is definitely it.
You can pick up a 75ml bottle, which will last several months I'm sure, for around £26 on Amazon...not that I imagine many of you do your cosmetic shopping online, more like Boots or Superdrug, but I imagine you can find it for a similar price there. It's also widely available in a 125ml bottle...but it must be that popular as it's out of stock on Amazon.
I guess that's the thing with most decent aftershaves - the price. You can't realistically find a 'cheap' one that is generally accepted as smelling 'nice'. Joop however, or Joop! if you will, is as close to it as you can get. I've tried a couple of other over the years, such as Calvin Klein's "be", but it paled in comparison. And besides, most ladies I've come across love this smell. Gents, you have been informed!
