Joop! Homme ~ Eau De Toilette

Joop! Homme is my husbands favourite perfume, he has quite a few bottles of it because family members buy him a bottle for his birthday and Christmas every year. My husband likes his fragrances and has a collection of them just as big as mine. If it were up to him he would only have four or five of them and those would be the Joop fragrances such as Joop Jump, Joop Go, Joop Night Flight etc. Although Joop Homme would be number one on his list because he has been using the scent since he was a teenager and it is still his all time favourite.

Most of the time when family members buy my husband Joop they get him the Joop gift set which consists of a 75ml eau de toilette spray, 50ml tube of shower gel and 50ml tube of shaving balm. A Joop! Homme gift set costs approximately £30-35 depending on where you purchase it from. I always think that gift sets are better value for money because you are getting the matching bath and body products to compliment and layer the scent of the perfume. I have referred to Joop! Homme as a perfume which most probably will have some people confused and thinking "its not a perfume its an aftershave" The truth is that Joop! Homme isn't actually an after shave, it is a perfume because it is an Eau De Toilette fragrance, if it were an aftershave it would be called Joop! Homme Aftershave. An Aftershave is totally different from an Eau De Toilette/Cologne/Parfum because aftershaves have a very small amount of alcohol in them because the are designed to be applied directly onto the face. The lack of alcohol in Aftershaves means that they don't have very good staying power and the fragrance only lasts for a short amount of time.

As you can see from the picture at the top of this review the bottle of Joop! Homme has a really nice modern design and shape. I think that the chunky shape of the bottle and the pink coloured perfume inside makes the bottle look modern without being too overly designed and fussy. I also like the fact that the bottle is made from clear glass because you can see how much of the perfume you are using and how much is remaining inside the bottle. The pink colour of the perfume is really similar to that of Hugo Boss Energise ( which is also a really nice modern fragrance)

Fragrance Notes

Joop! Homme Eau De Toilette is described as having ~

Top notes of Bergamot, Cinnamon, Orange Blossom and Jasmine
The top notes are the first phase of the perfume; they are usually the most volatile and evaporate from the skin very quickly. The top notes are usually very light and refreshing and their scent usually lasts for anything between five and ninety minutes.

Middle notes of Honeysuckle, Sandalwood, Vetiver and Patchouli Oil
The middle notes of a scent are therapeutic and balancing oils, sometimes the middle notes are often referred to as the heart notes of a scent. The middle notes are not always evident and can take between thirty and sixty minutes to develop on your skin, and they last for anything between two to four hours.

Base notes of Amber, Tonka Beans, Musk and Vanilla
The base notes are the longest lasting notes in a fragrance, most perfumes use the same base notes. This is because they give the perfume more staying power and stop the top and middle notes from evaporating from your skin as quickly.

The Scent

As soon as Joop! Homme is sprayed onto your skin you can immediately detect a warm, spicy aroma. The aroma from Joop! Homme isn't overpowering or too strong; Most of the time Men's fragrances are really strong and overpowering when they are first sprayed because they have a really strong alcoholic aroma at first. I was pleasantly surprised with the aroma from Joop! Homme when it was first sprayed because there wasn't much of an alcohol smell from it.

The warm spicy aroma which you can smell as soon as you spray Joop! Homme is that of Cinnamon and Orange Blossom; I think that the Cinnamon gives the fragrance a subtle spicy edge. I think that the subtle Cinnamon top note compliments the other fragrance notes nicely and gives the fragrance its masculine edge. The cinnamon top not isn't too overpowering or spicy, it is more of a background fragrance note which blends in nicely with the others.

The top notes of Joop! Homme seem to last for an hour or so before they start to fade and blend in with the middle notes of the perfume. I think that the Orange Blossom and Jasmine seem to linger a lot longer than the Bergamot and Cinnamon fragrance notes do. The different range of top fragrance notes compliment each other nicely because there is a spicy kick which is accompanied with the sweetness of the orange blossom and the floral aroma from the Jasmine. Although there is a slight floral aroma in the top opening notes of the fragrance this doesn't mean that it smells feminine at all; it is still a very masculine aroma.

The middle notes of Joop! Homme are slightly similar to the top notes because there is still a sweet/floral aroma which is accompanies with a slight woody/earth aroma. The sweet floral aroma in this phase of the scent is most probably that of the Honeysuckle and Sandal wood. The woody/earthy aroma which is the most identifiable is that of the Patchouli Oil and Vetiver because the Patchouli has a rich woody earthy aroma which is quite strong compared to the Vetiver. The Vetiver has is much lighter than the Patchouli and adds a slightly woody, earthy, spicy almost smoky aroma to the scent which I think gives it more depth and richness. The earthy/woody fragrance notes seem to have the best staying power in this phase of the scent and last for approximately 4 hours before the gradually fade and blend in with the base notes of the fragrance.

After the top and middle notes of the fragrance have worn off you will notice that the fragrance has a completely different aroma, the scent changes from being spicy/woody/earthy to more of a musky/sweet scent. This is because the base notes of the perfume are sweet musky ones which compliment each other nicely and all smell slightly similar. The musky aroma is that of Musk funnily enough, although its not a cloying or heavy musky aroma more of a delicate and light musk. The Musk is accompanied with the sweet aroma from vanilla and the warmth of Amber. The Vanilla aroma in the fragrance is quite sweet and is the most prominent because of the addition of Tonka Beans. Tonka Beans smell slightly similar to vanilla although they have a slight almond aroma. The base notes again have great staying power just like the top and middle notes of the fragrance; I would say that the base notes last for approximately five hours before the fade completely.

Perfume Information

All perfumes smell slightly different on different people, and this is due to us having different oils in our skin. The staying power of a scent also differs from person to person because we have different types of skin oils too. I said in the review that this perfume lasts for about three or four hours on me, but it could last a longer or shorter amount of time on you.

People who have dry skin types will notice that perfumes don't last long on their skin. If you have dry skin and have this problem you should try layering the scent of a perfume by using the matching body lotion or shower gel before applying the perfume. By doing this you are layering the scent and applying a base for the perfume to layer itself upon, so you should notice that the fragrance will last a lot longer on your skin.

If you like the sound of this perfume then I advise that you go into your local perfume store and test it before you buy it. When testing the scent spray it onto your wrist and wear it for a few hours before you decide whether you like it or not, because the scent changes the longer you wear it due to the different notes which make up the fragrance.

When testing a perfume don't smell the scent on a perfume card because it might smell lovely on the card and when you buy it and wear it at home it might smell totally different and you might not like the scent you are wearing. I made this mistake a few times in the past and wasted £30 on a fragrance which I didn't wear again and put in the bin.

Staying Power

Joop! Homme has fantastic staying power considering it is an Eau De Toilette fragrance. If my husband applies Joop! Homme first thing in the morning you can still smell it on him at bed time. On average I would say that the fragrance lasts for approximately 12-14 hours on the skin before it completely fades. I think that it is a great scent to wear for any occasion because you can be sure that it will last all through the day and into the night.

Remember that this isn't an aftershave it is an Eau De Toilette fragrance. Although you can also purchase Joop! Homme in the Aftershave format too, but be ware that it doesn't have near as good staying power as the Eau De Toilette does. If you are just looking for a light fragrance which only lasts for a couple of hours then the Aftershave is probably the best option for you. If you want the fragrance to last you throughout the whole day then opt for the Eau De Toilette.

==My Opinion==
I think that Joop! Homme is a really lovely, musky sweet fragrance which has a modern aroma considering it was first released in 1989. I think it is a perfect scent for any occasion wither it be to the office or a night out. It isn't an overpowering strong aroma which will choke other around you, it is a fragrance where as you only have to use a small amount at any one given time.

If you like sweet/spicy fragrances which are slightly musky then this is the scent for you. I think that Joop! Homme would make a perfect present for someone's Christmas or birthday regardless of age. The scent is really flexible and would suit the younger or older generation.
