~ ~ It’s almost upon us again! Soon the engines will roar and all the beautiful people will return from their winter “hibernation” in sunnier climes, as the big boys of the motor racing world gear up for this season’s Formula One opener, the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne this coming weekend. (3/3/02) The Irish, off course, will have an interest, as one of our favoured sons, Eddie Jordan, tries once again to lift his Jordan team from the also ran position it has occupied in the last couple of years into the big boy’s league of motor sport.
~ ~ There have been many “false dawns” at Jordan since they made their Formula One debut back in 1991. They won their very first Grand Prix in 1998, with former 1996 World Champion Damon Hill behind the wheel, and in a car powered by a Mugen-Honda engine. Two more wins were to follow in the 1999 season with the skilled Heinz Harald Frentzen driving, and they were actually in contention for the driver’s title in the same year right up until nearly the end of the season, when mechanical and electrical failure took its toll on the car in a couple of races, and they dropped down the rankings. Eddie Jordan is the leader and lynch pin of the team, with his charismatic personality and entrepreneurial skills, that led to a lucrative long term sponsorship deal with cigarette manufacturer’s Benson and Hedges in 1996. He has always had an eye for good drivers and for rising young talent. Many of today’s established stars of Formula One cut their teeth in a Jordan car, including the current World Champion, Michael Schumacher, who raced with them in their opening season in 1991. His brother Ralf followed suit, and at other times they have employed the likes of Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, Britain’s very own ex-World Champion Damon Hill, as well as the irrepressible Irishman, Eddie Irvine.
~ ~ But early reports for this season do not seem to auger too well for Jordan. They have lost their sponsorship deal with Benson and Hedges, who have no doubt seen the writing on the wall in regard to the impending ban on cigarette advertising in the sport, and have decided to cut their losses early. Eddie Jordan has managed to pull a rabbit from the hat yet again though, and has brokered a new deal with the German company DHL, who are partly owned by the massive Deutsche Post. This will see Jordan turning out in new “colours” this season, and also with a brand new engine, the EJ12, developed during the winter by the engineers at Honda. Honda reckoned they had developed the old engine to the absolute limit of its capabilities, and had no choice but to pursue a new line if they wished to remain competitive in the cutthroat world that is Formula One racing today. But the combination of a both a new sponsor and a new engine, which has not yet been tried out in the heat of a competitive race, probably mean that Jordan will again struggle this season to remain competitive, and to mount any kind of a real challenge to the likes of the awesome Ferrari team, and its two main rivals, McLaren and Williams.
~ ~ In pre-season testing the new car and engine have been well off the pace, and has even been lagging behind such lowly outfits as Sauber (with an old Ferrari engine) and Arrows. There are also the “wheel men” themselves to be considered. This year the two drivers for Jordan will be the Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, (who, it has to be said, enjoyed his best season ever with Jordan in 1997) and the as yet unblooded in Formula One Japanese driver, Takuma Sato. My own feeling is that while Fisichella may be a competent enough driver, he is simply not in the same class as drivers like Schumacher, Coulthard, and the new rising star of Formula One, Juan Pablo Montoya. And Sato is as yet an almost unknown quantity, who even if he proves himself to be yet another Eddie Jordan “discovery”, will nevertheless take time to find his feet in the white heat of the motor racing arena.
~ ~ So despite the recent launch of the new Jordan car in a huge airport hangar at Brussels airport in a blaze of media attention, and despite the unflagging optimism and enthusiasm of Eddie Jordan himself, I would be most surprised to see Jordan making their long awaited breakthrough this coming season. Although as a long time supporter and admirer, I will continue to hope.
Advantages: Modern team with lots of promise and Eddie at the helm! Disadvantages: Some poor results this season
...ahem!), and in particular, the Jordan team.
I guess it’s more to do with the man himself, Eddie Jordan, rather than anything to do with the best Formula One car, or the team with the best technological and speed advancements. Eddie is simply one of the nicest, liveliest and most fair team owners you could wish to meet. His flamboyant nature and ever-ready smile adds to his appeal and you can always count on EJ to be the life and soul at those ... ...for Eddie is obvious.
Jordan has a relatively short history in the sport compared to say, Ferrari. But their sheer enthusiasm and dedication to the sport has resulted in a great deal of success for Eddie, currently with Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jarno Trulli as number one and two drivers, although Trulli seems to be outclassing his team mate at present. This season, Jordan seem to have lost a little of their impetus, with Heinz Harald Frentzen currently ...

Advantages: Glamarous quite fast cars. Disadvantages: More motivation and hopefully more reliability
EJ or Eddie Jordan was a man with a mission when he founded the Jordan team in 1991. 10 years on in 2001 he's still on that mission. Though he has come far in a decade he still hasn't managed to get a Jordan car to win a championship title. EJ has his own style of managing slightly relaxed but determined. You could say, 'never say die', if you know what I mean. The Honda engine package was well ok and it was in close competition with fellow Honda ... ...the lime light.
The Jordan car of this year is as ever stunningly created with a design modified from previos years. Jordan are probably the most well known teams in the world with thier glamarous approach with pit babes, merchandise fit for Armani stores and great celeb followings. There is however a great room for improvement. The drivers need to be more focused and motivated than last year. Especially HHF who I think has still to show his true ...

Advantages: Everything in place for 2001: Drivers, Engine, Designer. Disadvantages: 2000 track performance not as good as 1999.
Jordan have had an excellent 2000 season, despite their lack of frequent points finishes compared to last year. Their true success lies not in how they have performed this year, but in how they have prepared themselves for 2001. Eddie Jordan has succeeded where many others (Sauber, Prost, Minardi) have failed in securing a top-line engine deal for next year when they will run Honda engines. Honda originally passed over Jordan in favour of British ... ...deemed unfair as Jordan have performed brilliantly with the second hand Mugen-Honda engines since 1998. BAR, however, were consistently unimpressive since their debut in 1999 given the huge amounts of sponsorship money and resources they have. The Honda deal was Eddie Jordan’s first major success of 2000, and has allowed him to further strengthen his team. The experienced and occasionally very quick Heinz-Harald Frentzen resigned for 2001 on ...

Advantages: A Team on the up! Disadvantages: Likely to disappoint
Jordan are one of the only teams in the last ten years to have actually managed firstly to survive and secondly to actually have a reasonable amount of success. Where as Pacific and Simtek fell by the wayside, Jordan has managed to continue and even prosper. The Team was set-up in 1991 and is based at Silverstone. They have had a number of famous drivers including Michael Schumaker who had his first formula one drive with this team before moving ... ...poor year so far for Jordan. It is my belief that Jordan have had there brief period of fame at the front of the grid and will fade back into the middle order to rejoin the likes of Beneton, while teams like Williams regain their top flight positions. ...

Advantages: One point achieved Disadvantages: Only one car finished the race
...a very successful qualifying for Jordan at the Belgian Grand Prix I am very disappointed at only one point being achieved by the team. With Jarno Trulli starting in second position I was confident that this could be the turning point of the season. After an incident with Button after only 4 laps I was to return home disappointed again. What has happened to the team which last year looked like it was closing in on Ferrari and McClaren ? This season ... ...successful hunting ground for the Jordan team. In previous years they have even recorded a victory here with Damon Hill and I hoped that a podium place would have been a reality, however the best we could manage was Frentzen in sixth place and one point. For a team that has now survived ten years in F1 the gap between the teams should be closing and not widening.
Lets hope that at Monza, in front of his home fans Trulli can finally turn in a performance ...

Advantages: An insight into Jordan's home life Disadvantages: You might not agree with my insights
much time with my ex, Dane Bowers. I like to think I?ve had the last laugh whenever the doorbell goes!
It is my mum at the door. She comes to look after Harvey while I can go out and earn some money. It?s another photo-shoot for a national tabloid. They normally have clothes (or bits of clothes) for me to wear, but I like to bring my own. No-one has the style or the sassiness of me ? I know what Jordan wears! My real name is Katie, you see, but when I think of my outside world, I call myself ?Jordan?. It is kinda like my stage name.
So, anyway, I rush upstairs to my walk-in closet. Which leather bikini would work this time? Hmmmm, or maybe the virginal lace thongs to really play with their minds? I grab a selection and off I go.
The shoot is long and tiring, I miss Harvey. I call mum on the mobile to see how she?s doing ...
Advantages: Very skilled Disadvantages: Getting old
He had a dubut as brilliant as Michael Schmachers and he has only managed to win one race in his career. He is now in the twilight of his career and is as good as ever. His only problem with formula one is picking the wrong team at the wrong time, but his move to Jordan will show us the fast Jean Alesi. The oppertunity came when Jordan driver Frentzen was sacked for going too slow and I'm sorry I agree. His speed wasn't the same as 1999 when he was outstanding, but now it looks like he's pulling a caravan.
The move to Jordan will definately suit him and his driving skills, I think he will outspeed Jarno Truilli. He was having a better year with Prost but still not a good one and when the opertunity to drive for a better car came he wanted it more than anybody else at the back of the grid. Meanwhile Frentzen will move to Prost and try ...

Advantages: Still has time Disadvantages: Confidence might take a knock
poor old Harry Heinz!!! Last season he was coming good and won 2 races. Jordan were lookng strong. Points were coming in all over the place. Even dickie die Damon scored!!! It was a nice suprise after the turmoil that he suffered at the hands of Williams who shattered the impressionable German's Confidence. The have a nasty habit of doing that. Eddie Jordan, on the other hand, is the complete opposite and is famed for nurturing these talents such as Rubens and Heinz Harold into superstars. It is therefore such a shame that he has not been given the car to back up last season's promise. ...
