What a stunning drive in the 2001 Malaysian Grand Prix! Apart from the incident with Eddie Irvine at the start, Jos drove like a man on a mission. At the restart after the dubious safety car period he ran as high as second, and looked as though he was going to put some pressure on David Coulthard. This performance certainly made the decision to get up early to watch the race a good one on reflection. Although there is no magic in F1, and there was always the realisation that it couldn't last and the Arrows would fall back, seeing a shake up at the front was just what F1 needs. This performance was reminisent of the 2000 Canadian GP, run in similar changeable conditions, where Jos was outbraking rivals all over the place. Herein lies the problem; two good performances a year can't justify a seat forever. Having been thrust into F1 in 1994, Jos was involved in a controversial barrel-rolling incident in his first race which resulted in Irvine been given a 1 race ban (increased to 3 on appeal). As team mate to a certain M. Schumacher on his way to an equally controversial first World Championship, Jos was always up against it when trying to make an impression. Subsequent heroics in a part season drive for the bankrupt Simtek team, and then a first spell with Arrows meant that he was never likely to trouble the sharp end of the grid. Until recently Jos has had the habit of being in the right place at the wrong time. Given a better test performance, he could have replaced Damon Hill at Jordan in mid 1999. He is apparently a wonderful (but slightly mad) bloke, but maybe F1's current youth fixation means that another potential superstar has slipped through the system.
