Legend has it that the gods threw down a lightning bolt and split an blue agave plant in half (the plant which tequila is made from). The juice that was produced was drank by the tequili indians who thought it to be a gift from the gods. The distillation process was introduced by the Spanish settlers who made it into a much stronger drink called 'Vino de Mezcal' (however, tequila and mezcal are actually not the same drink at all). Soon the drink became the favorite drink of Mexico and was named tequila after the town where it was born. Also, apparantly margaritas were named after an exotic nightclub dancer ;o)
Ah tequila i love it so...keeps the good times rolling.... The Cuervo tequila served behind most bars you will find is the Cuervo Especial (Cuervo Gold) and tastes quite sweet and smooth. But there is also Cuervo Clasico, which is the silver one that tastes faintly citrus-y and leaves a crisper after-taste. The difference between them is the way they were matured in barrels (especial in large american oak barrels with amount of Reposado, clasico in oak with silver tequilas). They also do ready-to-drink margerita bottles which are made with Cuervo Gold which are pretty cool and have recently introduced new margerita Mini's which come in smaller bottles and look quite fun (also made with Cuervo Gold) but i havent seen them anywhere yet >_<
Tequila has gotta be one of my favourite spirits (besides sambuca), as i don't like vodka unless it's with a mixer or something. But tequila i can drink lots of straight shots of and enjoy and not feel ill (unless i go over my limit!) and feel happily happy drunk :D and it makes me want to dance. lots. and not care that i look like an idiot. And making really gorgeous looking margeritas with coloured salts and stuff if you're having a party is really fun to do (we recently had a mexican themed night at the bar which i work in - SO much fun).
For some reason i have found that other tequilas often just don't taste as nice as Jose Cuervo and are not as smooth, so i'd say its worth spending that little bit extra (can't remember how much a bottle is, but its not exactly cheap) and a shot of tequila in a bar will normally cost you from £1-£2. And it gets you nicely lairy.
For making the perfect strawberry margerita (personal favorite), rub the rim of the glass with lime and dip in sugar. Mix (in a blender) one part Cuervo Gold with two parts lime margerita mix with some fresh strawberries and crushed ice until its smooth, then pour into the glass and serve with a nice fresh strawberry :P
Also, for an alternative to the regular salt and lime/lemon with your tequila shot, why not try a pinch of cinnamon and a slice of orange? yum ;o)
