..."Le Tour du Monde en 80 Jours" is a delightful adaptation of Jules Verne's classic novel "Around the World in 80 Days", by Emilie Pattay, and is part of the "Simple French Readers" series of illustrated books. (Please understand "Simple French Readers" in the right context!!!) The French is of a moderately simple standard, and any colloquialisms and complications that do creep into the text are explained at the rear of the book. Books of this sort are an excellent medicine for Higher, Standard Grade, A or O level French exam jitters.... Read review

Advantages: Very enjoyable to read, imaginative
Disadvantages: Naive but that's Vernes' charm.

...If I'm getting fed up with the over sophistication and sheer coldness (with exceptions) of modern sci-fi in both literature and film, I find myself wanting to read either Verne or Wells to redress the balance. This is a delightfully imaginative and enjoyable classic Vernes number. You know it's naive but that is Verne's charm - he writes with good description and his characters are fairly rounded and likeable, but it's when he gets into the journey itself that you can sense his enjoyment in the writing. You feel he wished he was part of the adventure himself which I think is fairly essential for any great fantasy/adventure novel. Probably his best work.... Read review

Advantages: very stimulating
Disadvantages: a bit childish

...When I was eleven to twelve I read almost all of Jules Vernes books. This one was one of my favourites. The characters are quite strong and the plot pretty well woven. It stimulated my mind to experience other countries and the journey also triggered the adventure in me. When I write this review I can vividly remember Phileas Fogg and the other characters. The drawing of the characters were simple and the picture of the world did not have many nuances but as a an adventure it is unbeatable. I was eager to find out if the be would be won. It gave me an appetite to read more to learn more about the countries and the world. It also inspired me to climb higher in trees in good adventirous spirit!... Read review
