Why is it that people always tell you how crap something is, WHEN YOU HAVE ALREADY BOUGHT IT ???!!.The Junior Ready Steady Cook Slush Maker is no exception.
It was my daughter's 4th birthday in September and she had been begging for a 'slushy maker' for ages. I decided that as Ready Steady Cook was a well known brand in the cooking industry then anything from the toy range would be also very good. How dilusional I was !
I bought the offending toy from the Blackburn branch of Woolworth's for £14.99. The picture on the box shows a little boy wearing an apron clearly making a refreshing slush. The box claims to be 'simple and safe' to use so I thought that my daughter would be able to use it easily. I wrapped it up and hid it for her birthday.
On the morning of her birthday as she opened all her presents, she was delighted to find a 'slushy maker' so immediatley she wanted to make a slush. The night before I had made some icecubes so that she could use her slush maker straight away. We opened the box and started to put the slush maker together.
The main toy is red and cylinder shaped and is quite durable. There are two clear juice dispensers that slot into the sides so that when you have crushed your ice you can then flavour your slush. On the top there are several cut outs for all the accessories. 4 little cups and spoons slot in, there is a large rectangle slot for a bigger red mixing spoon and finally we come to the exciting part... the ice crusher. There is a cog with a handle that slots into the cut out 'crushing hole' and inside the cut out hole is a small knife blade. The idea is to " Place ice into the slush maker. Turn the handle to crush the ice into little bits. Add your favourite flavour and enjoy your refreshing drink" Easy peasy. My daughter was by this point jumping up and down craving "slushy". She rumaged about inside the box and then I heard the words.. " there's no ice cube tray mummy "
I read the instruction booklet and there was a picture of a lovely red icecube tray that clearly said ENCLOSED ! We had another look inside the box but could not find it. My daughter didn't want to make slush with ice from the boring white ice cube trays mummy already had in the freezer, she wanted her own red one " like that one there mummy" she said as she pointed to the one in the instruction booklet. I telephoned Woolworth's and explained the situation and as I would be in the Town Centre the following day it was arranged that I would pop into the store and they would give me one (an ice cube tray that is !). We were satisfied with that and my daughter was happy that we were going to the shop for her red icecube tray so she was happy to get down to the business of making slush.
I took the ice cube tray from the freezer and popped two ice cubes into the 'crushing hole' and tried to put the lid on to start crushing. The ice was too big ! So I put 4 ice cubes in a snappy bag and hit them with a rolling pin to smash them, and as my daughter clearly pointed out, " that's not what the little boy is doing". Eventually we placed the broken ice in the 'crushing hole' and my daughter took over and tried to turn the handle. She couldn't turn it as it was too difficult. I had to take over cursing the blasted thing. My daughter placed a cup under the 'crushing hole' to catch all the crushed ice that would come out to make her slush.... Guess what came out, SNOWFLAKES !!! It took a full tray of ice cubes to three quarters fill one of the tiny cups with crushed snowflakes. My daughter then wanted to make it blackcurrant, so I half filled one of the dispensers with blackcurrant. My daughter turned the little tap on the dispenser and the juice melted all the snowflakes. By this point I was ready for throwing it into the bin.
My daughter was very disappointed so when Dora the Explorer came on the TV she ran off to watch it, leaving her blackcurrant disaster on the table and I went to make a well earned cup of tea. When I returned to the table to put the slush maker away the dispenser had leaked all over the table covering the surface in sticky blackcurrant ! I wiped it clean and put it on the work top and my daughter never mentioned it again for the rest of the day.
The next day we went to Woolworths for the icecube tray and can you imagine the look on my daughters face when the lady behind the counter handed my daughter a WHITE ICE CUBE TRAY !! I can confirm that the ready steadycook slush maker is still in the same spot and has talked about or even been touched or used again since !
Advantages: kids enjoy making slush Disadvantages: does not make slush properly
...lollies.
When the ice is ready you add it into two parts the nner part is where the small blade is and the outer part is where you add warm water to help soften the ice other wise it gets to difficult to crush you then pop on the lid and and turn the handle on the top of the machine this can take some time and can be quite difficult to turn although the ice does come out almost slushy it does get a few hard lumps of ice in it.there are little white ... ...on the tray at the bottom so that the slush can just drop straight into the cup.

Advantages: kids enjoyed setting it up Disadvantages: does not slush
The Junior Ready Steady cook slush maker was given to my 5yr old and 2 yrd old as a christmas present. They thought it was great and couldn't wait to use it.
We put the ice in the top & the juice in the compartment for jucie and put everything in it's place and commenced slushing... well not quite. The 'ice' does not slush at all; the plastic device used for slushing isn't sharp enough to crush the ice; we all tried and in the end the kids got very ...
