Oh yes, goldfish.
Nonetheless, I did feel the need of a few cookery books. They had a good selection and the prices seemed very reasonable. As always the 'Recommended Retail Price' that they had undercut so drastically was ridiculously high. I don't think I've seen these books anywhere for that much - but I digress.
I chose one. I can't say which as it's a present for my other half (don't you just love those non-presents that you get to use yourself) and he occasionally reads my ops. It was indeed a veritable bargain and despite the extra £1 postage it still whiffed of a good deal.
I waited.....
An email confirmation arrived. Great.
I waited some more......
A catalogue arrived. Fair enough.
I waited some more......
An apology arrived saying the book was out of stock so I'd have to choose another. Not at all great.
I rang the helpline..... (which I later discovered was at enormous cost on my phone bill)
They agreed to postpone the original order until the book was in stock. It would now be a Christmas present. Great.
A statement arrived, with another book list...... Fair enough.
Then a final demand, pay within ten days bill...... Not so great.
I rang the helpline...... (I hadn't seen the first phone-bill at this point and was on hold for 20 minutes - Lord help me when I come to paying this one!) still no-one answered, so I hung up.
All I wanted to know was whether my book was on it's way, and could I please pay for it once it had arrived, like you normally do.
So, I emailed...... Great.
No response to this day.
Not at all great.
I also requested that due to the huge delay of the book arriving (TWO MONTHS AND COUNTING!) would they please substitute the free fiction book that was to come with the original order, with the current free cookery book for October's offer. Like I said, I don't read novels.
Again - No reply.
I have got the 500 points off mypoints though which is something - although I had to remind them - but that's another story.
Right now, I'd like to cancel the whole membership. I've received bills from just good books and almost equal bills for phonecalls, trying to ask a simple question.
BUT NO BOOKS.
I'd like to take a vote on what I should do. Please leave your votes in the comments boxes.
Advantages: No "Edotor's choice", minimal commitment, fixed postage costs. Disadvantages: 75% off all books only applies to introductory offer>
...Mypoints directed me into the Just Good Books site (www.justgoodbooks.co.uk) which advertises “75% off every book” I thought I’d found the equivalent of the everlasting bottle of whisky, and when I was offered 500 Mypoints for buying in I thought it was too good to be true.
If things look too good to be true, they probably are, but there was this screen in front of me offering the latest P. D. James, “Death in Holy Orders” ... ...John Grisham’s “A Painted House”, just for the pleasure of having me buy from them. Even with P&P at £3.99 I couldn’t believe I was getting three hardback books for £12.24. I could have bought up to six books. There are other books currently in the introductory offer. In the “Real Life” section there’s Randy Taraborelli’s “Madonna” (that’s real life?), and Jamie Oliver’s “The ...

Advantages: Cheapest prices for newer books, Many special offers, free books Disadvantages: Do not have the full range especially older titles
Just Good Books blatantly advertise that they beat anyone on the price of thousands of books and not just any old books, but the best books money can buy.
After viewing such a statement it was only natural that I was pretty interested in finding out more.
First you will need to become a member. This is free and you will be required to provide your full name, address and credit cards details.
Just Good Books (I will refer to them as JGB) offer ... ...home & garden and other ranges that one would expect from a book dealer.
Many books are available at 50% and 75% less and these are usually advertised on the homepage. You can also do a search to find out what books are available at these discounts. I was pleasant surprised at the books available in this area and I am sure you will be too.
One off their more popular offers is the first three titles of Harry Potter books for £9.99 and get Harry ...

Advantages: Erm....offers are good but they never deliver Disadvantages: the whole thing
Just for books is a really crap service, to be quite blunt!
Im a big fan of books so when I saw the offer 6 books for a fiver and get them delivered in time for Christmas. What a great idea I thought. Many of the books also had 75% off which I thought was a good deal for Christmas, I hadn’t seen any other book clubs do such as offer,
so I went onto to click the hyperlink within the email to have a look at what was on offer.
I was quite surprised ... ...them just being released in places such as Whsmiths, so I was more than happy with what I saw before me and couldn’t wait to get clicking away.
Having had a look those books, which were on offer, I clicked on the following, which should have been delivered before Christmas:
1. Billy Connolly – Biography
2. Madonna – Biography
3. Harry Potter set (All 4 books)
4. Marian Keys – Under the duvet
5. Victoria Beckham – ...

Advantages: NONE - THEY DONT EVEN HONOUR THEIR INTRODUTORY OFFERS Disadvantages: EVERYTHING
...turn it round but they just seem to go from bad to worse.
Their latest trick is that they take your initial order, (ie five books for a pound each) then say that some are out of stock, so you don’t actually benefit from their initial offer. In they case of Home Software World I didn’t receive any of my joining offer items.
However once you are a member you then have to buy one item per magazine. This is true in Taste, and Home Software ... ...were neither requested or received. Just Good Books (ie all BCA companies) have ignored every communication I’ve sent via email or normal mail.
The latest problem is that they are charging my credit card on a weekly basis for the same items. The Credit Card Company say that they have to give BCA 30 days to reply to disputed items, so it looks like the only way I can stop this is to cancel my credit card.
This is just a warning to avoid any ...

...offer good value. Just Good Books is a relatively new club. When you join you are offered the opportunity to purchase up to 6 books at 75% off and you also get a free copy of the Encarta Dictionary - an enormous tome. A deaf academic is murdered, when, why, and by whom are the questions morse has to unravel, in this complex murder mystery. Morse and Lewis once again investigate and find many motives, is it greed, jealousy or something else. Once again this is well written and nicely plotted with yet another style of writing to stop the genre becoming stale. What makes Dexter's books so good is the detail put into the support cast, bringing extra dimensions to the books, beyond just Morse and Lewis. Good relaxing read, highly reccomended, as are all the Morse books that I have read. ...
Advantages: Fantastic story telling and character relationships Disadvantages: None
This book was a fantastic read, gripping, tense and with a few good twists. It is the first in the Trojan War Trilogy (and the other 2 books are just as good) and was a great opening book.
If your into historical fantasy books this is definately worth a read; Gemmell has a fantastic way of writing in that he will tell you a part of the story and then the same story will be told again from a different characters perspective, giving you a new perspective, from a different angle so to speak.
And the characters in the story are all fantastic, focusing around Helikaon and Andromache and their struggles, with a few other important characters, all have a brilliant story surrounding them. And they come together in an unexpected way.
I couldnt put this book down, and would recommend it to any fan of the genre. Gemmell's take on the Trojan ...
Advantages: Funny and light-hearted. Disadvantages: Can be slow at times.
This Mike Gayle book is interesting reading, looking at the relationship between father and daughter and husband and wife. The book shows teh consequences of a one night stand and how they can surprise you years down the line. The book kept me gripped and was a good page turner without being too heavy. It is refreshing to read a book about emotions written from a male point of view. Both funny and heart-renching at times, with sad and comic moments throughout that everyone can relate to. Reccomended especially for anyone with a partner who already has a child as it highlights the difficulties of excepting the situation. However, this is also a goodbook for those just wanting an enjoyable and stimulating book to read. ...
