I picked up the eagerly anticipated Onkyo 606 a few weeks ago; I have paired it with a KEF 2005.2 5.1 surround speakers, both in silver finish. I purchased both from A1 Audio based in Sheffield, who supplied direct to me in Glasgow. I also bought 2 set of KEF floor stands to mount the speakers on.

The Onkyo/KEF system replaces a budget Sony out of the box DVD/surround 5.1 system... and what a difference, just a totally different experience. I have hooked up the Onk with my PS3 via HDMI for gaming, DVDs & Blu-ray use. Am not gonna put anything on the spec of the 606 here, as that is pretty widely available elsewhere.

I have connected the KEFs to the Onk with QED silver micro speaker cable.

Out of the box everything feels very well put together, very strong and sturdy quality build. But everything is also big, much bigger than I expected given my old Sony system, the wife wasn't exactly happy about that side of things!

So far I have used the system for gaming (GTA4 & COD4), CD audio, a couple of concert DVDs (Muse HAARP & Foos Hyde Park) and for radio listening. I am by no means a hifi or home cinema buff, but I have found the sound quaity excellent for all forms that I have used it for so far. Initially all the different setup options are a bit daunting, with a bit of help from the whathifi forums I have cut through some of the jargon and fairly quickly have been able to get the system set up to optimise the sound options available from the 606 and the PS3.

So far the system is definitely a massive improvement on my budget out of the box Sony system, and I am very happy with my purchase. And certainly plenty of volume available to upset the wife, and I don't think I have hit 75% on the volume dial!

The next bigt test will be when I watch I am Legend on blue-ray with the associated hi def audio...
