Stop me if you've heard this one before, but I'm an opinionated student who needs money. I've been a bit annoyed about two things recently:
1) People taking my opinions way too seriously and leaving long-winded irate comments in response.
2) People...

I once came across a 'Kartoffelnhaus' in Germany, literally a 'potato restaurant', which struck me as being quite strange. It wasn't until I went to a Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food restaurant some weeks later that, though devoting an entire restaurant to a particular type of food does seem odd - the idea is actually quite common. So how well do KFC fare in creating an entire fast food chain along the lines of variations on chicken?
The chicken comes in three forms - burger, bites or bucket. The burgers usually contain a chicken fillet - whole meat and far less processed than the Burger King or McDonalds' equivalent - topped with lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and a choice of various others including cheese or spicy sauces. The bigger burgers, 'towers', usually have a hash brown and yet more filling sandwiched between a fluffy bun. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of burgers due to the high salad content, but my girlfriend is a big fan of KFC burgers and invariably chooses these.
The bites include a number of different meals. The recently launched 'popcorn chicken' mercifully does not actually contain popcorn, they are actually more like chicken nuggets, a tasty and simple meal for children served with a selection of dips. A more sophisticated alternative is the Twister, a tortilla stuffed with strips of fillet chicken, lettuce and tomato. This is probably the healthiest option available, a nice alternative to the endless burger and chip combinations available elsewhere.
Finally there are buckets, containing a number of chicken pieces coated - as all the chicken is - in 'The Colonels' delicious southern topping. The quality, however, varies due to a number of factors. They are best avoided in service stations where they will have been kept warm for several hours. Occasionally the chicken itself - being unprocessed - is too bony or fatty. The bucket idea, however, works well in creating a simple, cheap, quick family meal. A variety of combinations priced around the £10 mark can include four servings of chips, a litre of a soft drink (Pepsi, Tango Orange or 7Up), servings of beans or coleslaw, and even a whole Walls Vienetta. When shared between a couple of people, the bucket deals are excellent value.
There are a number of factors that distinguish KFC from its' fast food rivals, factors which in my opinion make it better. The choice of drinks is better than McDonalds or Burger King where the soft drink alternatives to Coca-Cola are vastly inferior. Pepsi, Tango Orange (far better than Fanta) and 7Up (far better than Sprite) give the consumer a more acceptable choice. The chips are cut thicker and are far tastier than those of McDonalds or Burger - and obviously also take longer to cool.
KFC's major restriction is obviously that it cannot appeal to those who do not like chicken. Neither does it cater for vegetarians particularly well (but they can go to the Kartoffelnhaus round the corner). As they are inexplicably less popular than the 'big two' of fast food, KFCs are usually situated in smaller premises creating seating problems. The lack of breakfast options is also a problem - but how many people have chicken for breakfast? Hopefully their ever-growing menu and advertising presence will redress the balance.
