I have owned a 2.9LX CRDi Sedona manual from new, March 2002. I am a minicab driver and the vehicle has covered 43000 miles to date. The vehicle is used 3 days per week commercially and the rest of the time it is a family car and for continental holidays etc. I hope my report will be a good indication of how this particular vehicle will serve a private motorist over say the next 4 years, considering my mileage.
MPG. 28-32 (Those of you reporting more, please tell me how!)
Tyres. 27000mls a set, if rotated front to rear at 14000mls. I use original equipment(Hankook) at £200.00 a set.
Brakes. Approx 18000mls for front pads. Buy from main dealer at £56.00 per set and fit yourself, easiest ever, 1 bolt to remove.
Servicing. Every 10000mls. Ranges from £150.00 to £540.00(ouch) for 60000ml service.
Reliability. (All warranty repairs, but take note if yours is out of warranty)
100 mls-Brake
light switch needed adjusting, poor pdi check at dealer. 3 visits to cure.
8000 mls-Centre two seats replaced as material on seat base slackened.
8010 mls-Centre two seat belt buckles replaced as new seats had different buckles(not checked by dealer!)
10000 mls-Renew front discs and pads to cure vibration.
20000 mls-Renew front discs and pads to cure vibration.
43000 mls-Breakdown at the side of the road the day before a holiday to Cornwall. Diesel pump failure. Vehicle removed to dealer then onto Delphi(fuel injection manufacturer). Dealers are not allowed to do these repairs as they have to be in a dust free atmosphere! Picking car up today 12/08/03. Warranty repair cost £3500.00. Yes £3500.00. This is not an isolated incident. My colleagues April 2002 Sedona is on its 3rd pump, injectors and pipes. (10000mls and 24000mls)and I know of one other locally.Dealer was not allowed to tell me how many others are involved.
Another thing to consider is the warranty. Mine is 3 years unlimited mileage and now it is 3 years 100000mls for new purchases. If you breakdown and the vehicle is off the road, you will be supplied with a loan car, but only for 2 days! It will not be a comparible vehicle, just a small hatchback and you have to pick up the insurance bill for it yourself(£9.00 + vat per day). I had to beg KIA Assist to let me have a vehicle for the duration of my hols which they did, but has cost me £130.00 insurance.
Overall, the car is good value for money, offering more space than its rivals but I think would benefit from being fitted with the 2.5 engine as fitted to the Sorento with regard to fuel economy. I would also recommend getting rid of it when the warranty expires, as repair costs are frightening.
Also, just for Torr.
Great motorway cruiser but handles like a barge around bends, especially with 6 pax on board.Pulls like a steam train with 143bhp on tap, engine turning at 2400rpm at 70 mph, power unit supposedly sourced from Mercedes. Up there with the rest as regards luggage space, i.e. not enough with 6 pax though you can move the seats around and comprimise on legroom. That said, legroom is better on all rows compared with Galaxy etc. Passengers love it, as do my family with regards to comfort. Gearchange is tractor like(operated by cable, goes out of adjustment super quick). I also drive 44 ton trucks with better changes! You do get used to it though, but will never match Ford. Senior citizens have problems with the height, getting in and out and would benefit from side steps which are not available for this model although you can get them for the mark1 Sedona fitted for about £500.00
Update,
57000 miles on the clock now and I have just bought my third set of front tyres. Trying a budget brand this time, @ £104 for the pair. Steering problem materialised last week, heavy lumpy steering. Dealer has seen it and has fitted new power steering pump to no avail, so it is going into the workshop to have a power steering rack fitted.
Managed to bypass the dealers and buy aftermarket brake pads @ £17 a shot. Abit better than £55 from the dealer. Also investigating direct import of parts from Korea-will keep you all posted!
Also if anyone is interested, the car is based on the American Ford Windstar, take a look at the American Ford website.
Hope this gives a balanced overview. I will update as the miles pile on!
Update 4/7/04
Steering problems sorted out . New rack fitted.
Aircon failed at 65000 mls, so back to dealer and a new condenser fitted, aircon is better than ever.
29th June 04. 69800 mls, car traded in against a new VW Caravelle2.5 tdi tiptronic.
Overall, not a bad car over its 28 month stint with me. One major snag and lots of minor ones. This review probably gives you an indication of life over 5 or 6 years private motoring.
Will review the Caravell, when I start putting on the miles.

Great review Chris, just wish I had read it sooner, I've just bought a 51 Reg Sedona 2.9LX CRDi, it has 44000 miles on the clock and in immaculate condition, purposely bought a diesel as the engines are meant to last for ever, however after just 1 month the fuel pump is packing up and particles have gone into the fuel system, told it will cost around £3500.00 but as the car is second hand the warrantee will only cover £1000.00

The detail in this review was excellent. I've ordered my new Sedona 2.9 CRDi LE, due for delivery next month. Luckily, we have it on my partner's Motability, so all we have to pay for is the fuel!!
Advantages: Cheaper than the average people carrier and has nice touches like the multi position seats and plush upholstery. Disadvantages: The fit and finish is not perfect in places and some peole may worry about Kia being an unknown make.
