My Sportage has just clocked over 100,000 miles and in that time it has gone all over Great Britain, across France, over the mountains and into Spain mostly hauling my 5 berth caravan (an Abbey Alliance). During that time, apart from the usual oil, plugs and filter all that it has needed was a cam belt (replaced at 70K), tyres and exhaust, not bad for a cheap 4x4.
It has been used in all weathers and has towed the caravan through muddy conditions that saw a Land Rover Discovery get stuck (I had to tow him out!). Snow is no problem, floods, mud, gravel, steep hills, rivers, nothing has stopped this little machine.
It gives me 29mpg solo and 20-25 towing and it will haul my van at 60mph all day. It doesn't use any oil and it runs as sweetly now as it did when I first drove it out of the dealers yard.
As a tow car it is fine although you need to stir up the gearbox when the hills get steep (not a problem solo). On the way back from Spain there is a very long, very steep climb over the French Border, the speed dropped to 30mph but the car dug in its heels and made it up with no hint of over heating.
The only thing I would change if I could would be the petrol engine, a turbo-diesel would have been nicer for towing, it is revvy and not full of torque but it is reliable.
I am now looking to buy a Kia Sedona 2.9TD as this will make towing easier but I am hanging on to the Sportage and hope to write another review at 200,000 miles!
