K&M 144 Baritone Saxophone Stand

Advantages: Everything about this sax is perfect - great tone, easy to play - a fantatsic horn
Disadvantages: It'll cost you dearly!

...I once had the chance to play one of these saxes when I was on music course, and one of the coaches had one. It is definitely the nicest sax that I have ever tried, and it was incredibly easy to play. I think this sax has had a fair bit of work done on it, which was why it played so perfectly, and it had a fenomenal tone, dark and rich - all you could ask for in a saxophone! You have to be aware when considering this sax however, that the Mark VI's are now around 40-45 years old, so you have to be prepared to put some work into them to get them to their best. Also, these saxes were all hand made, and there is a difference between each sax - some play better than others. ...play louder than anyone else they've ever heard, so they're probably greatful!! It comes in a massive coffin-sized case that is very robust, although it is square and not sculpted into a saxophone shape like some other cases. I get it in my Clio regularly, but have to put the rear seats down. You'd need a very big car to get it in the boot alone!! I occasionally have problems with a sticky G# key, but I haven't had it serviced since I got it so it's probably my own fault!! I have never played any of the supposed top saxes (Yanagisawa, Selmer, etc) but this is a very good sax. Probably not quite to a professional standard but for me as a reasonably good amateur player it's great. It's a bari sax baby, I love it!!... Read review

Advantages: Well made, well finished and well supported.
Disadvantages: A little higher price than Taiwanese alternatives

...Recently purchased a Selmer Bundy II Alto Saxophone and it's been a joy ever since. I'm an adult beginner and this instrument is not one of the Taiwanese toys that is often inflicted on younger students. The instrument is a joy to play and a delight to look at. The instrument has a rich tone and accepts a range of mouthpieces that alter the sound significantly. There has always been a certain kudos attached to sax players - let's face it they are a sexy instrument and for a beginner's instrument the Bundy II is one of the sexiest.
