At first I did not buy a Karcher, but a big ugly JCB pressure washer. The first thing i am going to say is don't get a JCB one. Hello fellow ciaoers. At first I did not buy a Karcher, but a big ugly JCB pressure washer. The first thing i am going to say is don't get a JCB one. It leaked and grumbled like an old man (sorry that was a horrible simily!) Anyway I took back the JCB and exchanged it for the Karcher K520M, which was about £50 more expensive. What a move that turned out to be. I bought this pressure washer from Argos, which would seem to contradict my earlier review, however i accepted being ripped off, paying a whopping £200! Ouch!
Let me set the scene for you: There is a big box lying on the floor and the prospect of setting it all up becomes a bit daunting. Don't be put off however. The machine is very easy to set up, just click the nozzle onto the main "water shooter", plug it in, connect the hose up, pull the handle and you're away!
Note: the washer does not come supplied with an attatchment which connects the hose to the "slot" in the machine. These cost about £3. I bought one which only releases water when it is pushed upon, this does the job perfectly.
The washer was perfectly powerful enough for what i was to use it for- cleaning the car. In fact the thing had bit of a kick to it. I don't mean to be sexist here, but it is a real man's toy. Using it is just like holding a big water gun really, great fun! A word of warning though, don't get carried away because that water can really hurt!
With the Karcher you get a few attatchments including a "dirt-buster" a brush and one with a variable power setting. The brush really is'nt up to much, you would be just as well off using a cloth and a bucket of water, but the other two are brillliant. The other two however, (which do the same job) are truly excellent.Performance wise they clean the car with absolutely no problem, they just wash the gunk away. This machine can even be used for clearing stains from paving stones it is that powerful. In fact what you do with it is up to you, it cleans cars, decking, windows, patio, grill whatever!
Be careful though... when cleaning my paving stones it blasted the cement from the joinings, and they had to be laid again, what a disaster!
There are, as with any machine a couple of problems: the power cord means that it wont reach too far. Problem solved with an extension. I was also quite hesitant about the whole water & electricity thing. They don't go too well together! This has not been a problem, and i have not been electrocuted (yet!).
The other problem is that the tube which the water squirts through is quite brittle so you have to be careful not to step on it.
All in all though, a truly decent little toy. It really will do anything (within reason, it doesnt fly or anything, though maybe i should suggest that in the improvement box...) Anyway, don't hesitate to buy one, and for goodness sake keep clear of a JCB, they make good diggers, not pressure washers.
Advantages: Very powerful pressure jet, solid, reliable, easy to use, does the job Disadvantages: The extension rod could do with being a few inches longer
...One tip - the Karcher Universal Cleaner fluid (which goes into the special reservoir) is a good buy for the machine: it is well worth spraying your "target" with the gun set so that it sprays the detergent foam, and to then leave it a few minutes before really blasting with the high pressure on full. The detergent helps cut the grease and reduce the cleaning time.
Any other observations? It is fun to use and helps keep my two young boys amused as ... ...You must get an extension electric cable for it (if you want to make most use of it) and I would always recommend that you have it plugged in through a RCD. It is fairly manoueverable - it has a fold out handle which can be locked in place, enabling it to be towed around and turned etc on its integral large two wheels with relative ease. For space saving it can be stored upright in the garage - not that it is that big, maybe 90cms long.
Happy cleaning! ...
